Once you can actually distinguish the gonopodium, it is time to separate the male from the female or they will reproduce. He starts to "receive" it before you can identify it. So when it is visible to the naked eye, he is very probably already fertile.

It only takes three weeks from the time of injustion. The period can be extended due to the stress level of the fish. Some recent studies have been quoted to say "The male platy can take as long as 8 weeks to become fertile and create offspring"

Platys become mature at around 6 months, he probably won't hold back from mating. They can become pregnant before they show male/female features. My little guppy tries to mate...hes 5 days old lol.
