Newbie here..... actually, just taking over for hubby who's working mandatory OT. Anyways, he added a few Gourami's from the local pet store on Sunday. I'm pretty sure that one has internal parasites. (Poo not expelling all the way (dragging it around), weak and tired-hanging by surface and on the floor, etc.) I need to remove the carbon part of the filter in order to treat the water.... so, is it the cylander spinning part as opposed to the rectangular sponge thing, or do I need to start taking things apart to find it? And I can run the filter without the carbon part??

So I've been using distilled water in my fish tank, intially my alkalinity was at 80. Within a couple days it dropped to 0 and has stayed there. From what I understand alkalinity helps the water resist pH changes? But then I read alkalinity is bad for the fish's gills and eyes?

So whats the deal, is having my alkalinity at 0 bad? Is there anything I can do to modify the alkalinity if I should have some? What is a normal / ideal alkalinity level?

Thanks in advance!

I have a couple air pumps for my new fish tank and they do not have on/off switches. This makes me think they are intended to be run constantly. Is that true? Does running them constantly decrease the life of the air pump?

When it reaches the flow of the filter it gets pushed away and drug in. When I look at it I can see what appears to be internal bleeding within the tail. Is it going to die?

I just bought a coralife pc and the adjustable mounting legs. The glass cover will not work with the legs. I called marine depot and the rep said that most saltwater aquarist do not use the glass lid. My tank is still cycling so I only have live rock now, but I would like to keep some soft corals. I have a 48 inch long 55 gallon, with the double light pc with lunar.

Should I use the glass lid and forego the adjustable mounting? I don't want my fish to jump out... is this a problem with saltwater fish? If I am not to use the glass are there certain fish (or combinations) that I should avoid? I really appreciate any help!!!

I want to make sure I do not put in too much. Don't worry, it is aquarium salt. Someone recommended it for a swim bladder problem he has. I've already gotten him peas to eat in hopes that it will just flush out and he will be fine. I'm really worried because I'm going away on spring break very soon and have nobody to watch/take care of him, only the automatic feeder :( I hope it's not an infection. He has the exact symptoms of a swim bladder disorder, he is a red cap oranda. I'm switching his food too, the other stuff had corn starch in it, but I used it for the whole year I had him and he didn't start having problems until recently.

I have a 55 gal aquarium with 2 african cichlids, 2 bala sharks and kissing gourami. Would it be ok to add a pleco if I find one 3+ inches. I am concerned about the salt. (about 1 Tbsp per gal) and the aggressivness of one of the cichlids.
