Infusoria is a good first food, for about a day or two. Plants will contribute to the environment that contains infusoria, but you won't have enough in the tank for them unless your water is quite hazy. If you have a few days, crush some lettuce in a jar of tank water and put by a window. When it's hazy it's full of infusoria. A better first food might be microworms if you have time to order a culture and get them going ( only if the fish have not spawned yet) or vinegar eels ( same restrictions as microworms). Within a week at the most they will be ready for baby brine shrimp and it's all up hill from there.

I have baby Molly fish, I just feed them finely crushed flake food, that the adults get, and a couple times a week they'll get crushed dreid blood worms as a treat
