Mostly it is not possible to tell the difference. In liuvebearers,(guppies, swordtails, platies and mollies) it is easy. the male has a long thin sex organ and has sex similarly like mammals. The females are a liitle larger and less colorful. Males have fancier tails. It varies from one species to another.

For most fish you can tell males from females, but it does matter on the details. It really matters what kind of fish you are talking about.
