Newbie here..... actually, just taking over for hubby who's working mandatory OT. Anyways, he added a few Gourami's from the local pet store on Sunday. I'm pretty sure that one has internal parasites. (Poo not expelling all the way (dragging it around), weak and tired-hanging by surface and on the floor, etc.) I need to remove the carbon part of the filter in order to treat the water.... so, is it the cylander spinning part as opposed to the rectangular sponge thing, or do I need to start taking things apart to find it? And I can run the filter without the carbon part??

The carbon is more than likely enclosed inside the filter Pad. Usually blue orwhite with a black backing. The carbon is sandwitched inbetween. These are inside the top of the filter. Just pull them out. your filter will run just fine without them.

Some filters have "bags" of carbon you really cannot miss these sounds like a bag of rocks.

The catalytic converter controls carbon monoxide, yet no longer by skill of filtering it. The catalytic converter converts it (think of that!) to carbon monoxide by skill of combining it with final oxygen interior the exhaust to produce carbon dioxide. All that relies upon on protecting the carbon monoxide low sufficient and the oxygen intense sufficient, and that's achieved by skill of the oxygen (O2) sensor. as long because of the fact the engine does no longer run too wealthy (the O2 sensor tells the engine pc how the mixture is doing) there is very almost no carbon monoxide out of the catalytic converter.

The spinny thing is your biofilter and should NOT be touched by your hands.
The carbon is either the pouch of little black pebbles, or it is inside the plasticy filter that the water runs thru.
If you carbon is connected to the filter, take the filter out and cut at the bottom to let the carbon come out.
If you are going to replace the carbon be sure to rinse it out with tempid water.
I wish you and your fishies good luck

It's been a long time, but I believe the carbon part is the charcoal. I think the rectangular spong thing is filled with charcoal. Squeeze it and find out.

So you need to change your filters -- fairly common.

The black rock looking stuff is the carbon. Yes, your filter will run without it.
