A few small snails would be the best bet in a smaller tank like a 1 gallon.

in a tank that small, i would just give it a quick wipe around at each water change (which should be twice a week) and limit the light source on the tank, light = algae, especially sunlight.
snails are cute and all, but they'd just be contributing to the poopy in the tank and not eat the algae that quickly either. apple snails are too big for a 1 gallon, and the smaller snails reproduce to plague proportions!

Scrub the tank when you change the water, and by a magnet cleaner for the side of the tank.
I don’t like sea snails… people keep telling me they’re hardy, but all of mine have died very quickly, and promptly flooded the tank with ammonia.
Then, that may be because my fish seem to enjoy picking up the snail and relocating it… Something tells me the snail may not enjoy the game quite so much…

Get a snail - bettas and snails do well together and snails don't need the same filtration that ther algae eaters need.
Good luck!

You can try sea snails- they are efficient and fast in clearing algae. They are also very cheap and affordable, if I am not wrong.
