I have a couple air pumps for my new fish tank and they do not have on/off switches. This makes me think they are intended to be run constantly. Is that true? Does running them constantly decrease the life of the air pump?

Yes, run it constantly. It is designed as a constant run motor and actually starting and stopping is worse on it than running is.

Most pumps don't have on off switches. They are meant to run constantly. As with all electronics running them constantly does wear them faster. They don't NEED to run all the time.

If you are running your air pumps to add oxygen to your tank, you can turn them off. Air pumps and air stones are decoration only and do NOT add Dissolved Oxygen (the oxygen your fish breath) to your tank. This can only enter the water by movement, such as your filter, powerheads (wind, waves waterfalls etc)

It depends on how powerful they are. and the size of the tank and type of fish you have. Generally they are meant to run constantly, but you should turn it off while feeding or when the fish are sleeping,if they are delicate fish, like babies, neons,or bettas. You can hook up the pump to a timer that will go on and off at preset times,or you could install your own switch.Of course ,the more fish you have and the less room there is,the more aeration you'll need.Constant on and off switching could shorten the life of the pump.

The pumps are designed to run constantly. Running them all day everyday won't hurt them at all.
