My 14 - year - old mixed breed,Maura, has just been diagnosed with primary kidney disease ( early kidney failure.) her appettite had not been good for a few days,so I took her to the vet on Tuesday, only to find that she had lost 15 lbs. since her last visit in March. It wasn't apparent ,as she was chubby, and has a very heavy coat.My vet did bloodwork, and the kidney problem was found. Now,I have had dogs with this problem before, and special diets improved their symptoms and prolonged their lives, but Maura,a former chow -hound,refuses to eat ANYTHING,except for duck and rabbit jerky, and cooked chicken breast. She is NOT supposed to have all that protein.I bought Hill's k/d diet, both dry and canned, and some veggie dog biscuits, but she will have none of it.She is taking Tums as a phosphate binder, and Nutri -cal to try and stimulate her appetite and keep up her energy. She is also on amoxicillin.Does anyone have a good homemade diet for dogs with kidney disease that's highly palatable? Thanks.
