I have an almost 2 year old basset hound/beagle. How long should he be able to be crated for? Yesterday, We left home for 5 hours-we took him out do potty IMMEDIATELY before leaving. Upon returning, we see that he has literally DESTROYED his cage (I have no clue how, this was an expensive and strong cage!!!!) and in doing so injured himself (his paw was bleeding), ripped up some carpet, put a small hole in the wall a and pooped in the house.
Also, we take him out to potty right before bed (between 10:30 and 11pm), yet he will begin whining at around 2am. If I let him out, sometimes he will potty, sometimes not, but he will immediately begin whining when I return him to his crate.
Obviously the dog hates his crate, however I know that in order to be a good dog owner, he has to follow MY rules, not vice versa. However between the whining (which can get very loud and persist for hours on end) keeping us all up and his recent antic when we left for 5 hours, I feel like I am going crazy.

Why is it okay for people to get in fights and they dont go to jail (like in boxing and wrestling)
but why is it considered animal cruelty if you make two dogs fight eachother?

im not saying animal fighting is good. im just asking.

I used to leave food and water out all day for them... but we're starting a strict schedule (once I figure it out).

How often should the dogs be walked to avoid any mess in the house? How soon before bed should the food and water be put away?

*My/our bedtime is usually 1am.

I found a female dog lying dead in the middle of a road probably hit by some vehicle. There were a few dogs lolling around looking curious. One of the dogs came sniffing around stood over it on all its four and suddenly started its pelvic thrusts enacting without really touching it; you know what I mean. One of the people who were standing by the side sneering at what was going on picked up a stone and threw at the dog. And the dog ran away yelping. I had heard of some ghastly stories of some serial killer who either masturbated or had intercourse with its women prey. But I had never seen anything like this. I am bewildered.

She is a 4-5 year old begal. She is shaking, and every once in a while, even if you don't touch her she will yelp in pain. She refuses to drink water. I'm very worried. She seems sad too and scared as well. She can barely walk two feet without plopping over and laying down. She seems like she wants to tell me something, but sadly I cannot speak to her like she was human. WHAT CAN I DO I AM WORRIED!!!!!!!?????????

I have a chuwahwah dog and she will be 14 in Nov.She was a Christmas present to me back in 1993. She seems to be pretty healthy for her age other than having some arthritis. Although she has slowed down alot, she still has her days where she will chase my 6 yr old son and play with him and act like a puppy. I was wondering if anyone knows how long a chuwahwah usually lives?

I just adopted a 5 month old terrier mix from the Humane Society. This is the first dog I've owned so I have a few questions...I am seeing through research that I should take her out every few hours for potty...I've taken her a few times and she still hasn't gone? Also, when I go to bring her outside, I put her leash on and she will just sit there and not move...I have to pick her up and bring her out...any advice??

I am getting another puppy in a week or so.
I have a greyhound pup already.
What breed of dog other than another greyhound should i get?
There are a few dogs i have already had these are:
Alsation,
Border collie,
Staffy and
Whippet.
Are there any that would get along with a greyhound pup????
If not are there any other breeds, that would get along???

Also my friend is getting a greyhound.
If you can please say anything that would help or just a good website would help!?
Thanks.

Seriously, im watching tv with the family, and I can clear out the room in less than a second. Why am I cursed with skunk-smelling gas? I mean, I eat healthy! And its not just today, it's everyday!!!
Is there a biological explanation to my problem? (and no its not like I do it on purpose)....some help on how to stop being so "gassy" would also be very helpful :-)

My dog has bladder stones and was given Hills S/D but it only comes as a can food and my dog will not eat it. She's used to dry food. Is there a dry food alternative?

I have a german shepherd - X. She's about 8 yrs. (estimated from SPCA) Occasionally, on walks, her hind legs would quiver and she would lean backwards and sideways. I was assured she didn't have hip-dysplasia (they did X-rays). This started about 6 months into getting her: about a year ago.

Can it be hip dysplasia?... someone said she's seizuring?

Let me preface this with the fact that he's got an appointment for the vet ASAP But please let me know if anyone has any ideas.

My 11 year old terrier has developed a strange set of symptoms. He's always had the little dog shakes, but it's recently gotten much worse. In the past two weeks, he's begun having real trouble on the stairs, listing to the left of the staircase as he climbs. His back left leg has also begun to shake ALOT more and he's holding his tail crooked. Out of nowhere, he has also started waking us up at night demanding to go out - crying.

He's had a small amount of persistent diarrhea...yet he's not having accidents in the house during the day while we're at work. His appetite seems fine. He's a little overweight, but not obese. What the heck??? Did he have a stroke, does he have a bladder infection? Please let us know if anyone has an ideas - we're veteran dog owners, and this has us confused and worried. (We will be going to the vet very soon.)

I have a schnauzer and a sheltie and my schnauzer, Lexi, just completely hates me. She doesnt greet me when I come home, she runs away when I come near her and the thing is, I'm always so freakin nice to her! I take care of her way more than my mom and she LOVES my mom. What can I do to get Lexi to like me?

I've recently brought home an emaciated dog from the shelter where I'm a volunteer. I'm going to be her "foster mom" until she's well enough to be adopted, and I need some suggestions on how to get her healthy and beautiful again. She is most likely a pure bred Yellow Lab, probably around 2 years old. She has very, very little body fat, and pretty obvious muscle loss as well. Her undercoat is all but gone, except around her neck. Her top coat is coarse and dull. Her teeth are in pretty good shape.

The good news is, she has a good appetite, and she now has somebody to care for her. I'm going to start feeding her a combo of canned and dry puppy food tomorrow to help her gain weight, but does anyone have any suggestions for some additional vitamins/supplements to help with her coat? Or even some suggestions on bulking her up would be great! Thanks! Here are a few pics of her:
