You only need a fence if you intend on having your dog off leash outside. If your dog lives inside and you walk your dog on leash several times a day and take him to dog parks or off leash areas a few times a week, he will be fine.
No dog is completely safe being off leash regardless of how well they are trained. With large, active dogs like huskies and shepherds, you will need to set aside significant blocks of time (at least an hour/day) for long walks.
This would be true even if you had a fenced-in yard as dogs do not exercise themselves and will spend most of their time in the yard lying around waiting for you.

Yes,my German shepherd only just got over her urge to run away at any chance and she is 6 years old and spayed! Most dogs will run when they are young,or at a new home, and since you live in the mountains, there will be all sorts of scents from wild animals and your dog will be more likely to want to follow them! It's just good sense to have a fenced yard if you can afford it,so you know your dog is safe.

fencing is a gd idea for all dogs esp med and lge ones like the husky and shephard. Even i u decide not to permantly fence because the porperty with the wooded mountains is yours, just get a temporary fence and an easily trained dog like a german, lab or collie, dogs youd expect to see on the farms and organisations like police, seeing eyes places etc. as they are the easiest to train and train him to stay close to home and always come home by a ceratin time like sundown. If the mountains arent yours and u get a dog without a fence u may very well have council on your back and many pound fees. I hope this helps and gd luk with your selection.

Yes, you will need a fence. I have a German shepherd named Kalo. Very good dog. But like any breed, if your shepherd sees something interesting, he WILL go and investigate. The more intelligent breeds like the German Shepherd get bored easily.

yes!! and you will need a fence that is at least 9 feet high. why can't you have an inside dog? that's what you need, especially if you live in or near mountains. and if you tie your dog up outside, you run the chance of them not being able to get away from a mountain lion or bear, or something of that nature.

definetly get the yard fenced my previous german shepards would runaway for no reason when my family didn't have a fenced yard, they're also(like most dogs) no use to change so they might freak out if not prepared

Hi,
It would be a good idea, because then it might run away, or get itself into a fight. (Do you live by wolves?)
If you do, deffinitely fence it in.. And fence it in good, or wolves will dig in.
German Shep's are very cute, you should deff. get one!
Enjoy your little bundle of joy =)

probably because he/she will need lots of room to run..or you can hook up a run which hooks to two trees and then a leash type thing is attached to the collar so the dog can run back an forth but it's not as good as running free

All dogs need to be fenced in or they'll wander off.
