Let me preface this with the fact that he's got an appointment for the vet ASAP But please let me know if anyone has any ideas.

My 11 year old terrier has developed a strange set of symptoms. He's always had the little dog shakes, but it's recently gotten much worse. In the past two weeks, he's begun having real trouble on the stairs, listing to the left of the staircase as he climbs. His back left leg has also begun to shake ALOT more and he's holding his tail crooked. Out of nowhere, he has also started waking us up at night demanding to go out - crying.

He's had a small amount of persistent diarrhea...yet he's not having accidents in the house during the day while we're at work. His appetite seems fine. He's a little overweight, but not obese. What the heck??? Did he have a stroke, does he have a bladder infection? Please let us know if anyone has an ideas - we're veteran dog owners, and this has us confused and worried. (We will be going to the vet very soon.)

One extra point: he's had a history of bladder stones (and two operations.) We're worried.

...but he doesn't appear to be blocked. He's urinating fine. No vomiting...and no strange eye movements.

It sounds to me as if he may have something wrong with his spine (an injury or arthritis.) This would explain the symptoms in the rear leg and tail, but not the diarrhea, unless it is stress - related. He could also have a virus, vestibular syndrome ( do his eyes move back and forth rapidly?) a bacterial infection.... So many things can go wrong with dogs of that age that I really can only guess.I hope your vet can solve the problem and get your dog feeling better. keep us posted, will you?

I would suspect either stroke or a back problem. Sometimes back problems could cause symptoms that seem neurological and some vets have the means to give chiropractic treatments to animals.

Best of luck to you and your dog.

sounds nuerological. could be an ear infection, liver/kidney failure....a numerous number of things . Without an exam and bloodwork results there is no way to diagnose over the computer

Either diabetes or a stroke. I hope it's the former as the latter isn't really treatable. Best of luck to your family!
