My 14 - year - old mixed breed,Maura, has just been diagnosed with primary kidney disease ( early kidney failure.) her appettite had not been good for a few days,so I took her to the vet on Tuesday, only to find that she had lost 15 lbs. since her last visit in March. It wasn't apparent ,as she was chubby, and has a very heavy coat.My vet did bloodwork, and the kidney problem was found. Now,I have had dogs with this problem before, and special diets improved their symptoms and prolonged their lives, but Maura,a former chow -hound,refuses to eat ANYTHING,except for duck and rabbit jerky, and cooked chicken breast. She is NOT supposed to have all that protein.I bought Hill's k/d diet, both dry and canned, and some veggie dog biscuits, but she will have none of it.She is taking Tums as a phosphate binder, and Nutri -cal to try and stimulate her appetite and keep up her energy. She is also on amoxicillin.Does anyone have a good homemade diet for dogs with kidney disease that's highly palatable? Thanks.

try her with a little cooked rice, and boiled chicken breast. a little bowl of cornflakes with some milk. and if you could get her to eat some ice cream. my little dog had the same problem, and would only eat meat. sadly she died two years ago. she was my baby for fifteen years, hugs to you both.

This is really tough. You know the diet changes she must make. I would try Chinese Traditional medicine, both herbs and acupuncture to get her eating again. also have her take walks to get her appetite perked up a little. I had a Samoyed that we spoiled on a trip by giving her burgers. She would not eat dog food for a very long time.
It was scary. Her hair was falling out! She was only four and relatively healthy.

At worst see about using a little prednesone if nothing else gets her eating. It may not be good for her kidneys, though, but, just a thought. Good luck!

I saw on that "It's me or the dog" show, you could try heating up the food a bit (not the biscuits, lol), in the microwave or something, not so it's hot, but just a bit warm, because it brings out the flavours and smells, so the dog will be more attracted to it. For the biscuits you could try leaving them in a little bit of water for a while so they go soggy (my old dog only ate soggy biscuits). And you could try trying to tempt her by feeding it bit by bit from your hand, that lady from the show managed to teach a dog that had never eaten actual dog food in it's life to start eating it in that way.

Sorry I don't know about a different kidney disease diet, but maybe this might help with getting her to eat that other stuff :)

She still needs protein so in my opinion you should not throw away all your meat products. but since you are concerned with your dog's appetite, try changing the diet slowly. mix her previous food with a little amount of the new diet and the increasing the increment daily for 3-7 days until she is eating the new diet only.

I am sorry to say, but your dog is in the evening of its life. You have to accept it. The best food for it at this point of time are of vegetarian, origins but it might be impossible for you to make it eat things that doesn't suit its palatte, So try to give skimmed milk in which you can boil grains. They are easily digestible with less proteins. Wish your dog all the best and hope it will recover soon.

Amoxicillin can kill the appetite, and cause upset stomach. I would continue giving her the chicken until she is off the antibiotics, then try getting her to take the new food.

Make it more palatable with chicken broth or sprinkle chopped chicken on it.

TEMPORARILY!
Just until she feels better and get used to the new diet.

Good luck
