Why is Chocolate Lethal?
Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.
Symptoms of Chocolate Dog Ingestion and Poisoning
You can recognize that your dog has eaten a toxic dose of chocolate from the symptoms. Within the first few hours, the evidence includes vomiting, diarrhea or hyperactivity. As time passes and there's increased absorption of the toxic substance, you'll see an increase in the dog's heart rate, which can cause arrhythmia, restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increased urination or excessive panting.
This can lead to hyperthermia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and even death.

I am a Vet Tech student, and this is taken right out of my text book:
Chocolate Poisoning: One would not think that someting as delicious as chocolate could also be poisonous, but chocolate can be fatal to a small animal. Chocolate is a good example of a substance that, if consumed in large enough quanities, can be poisonous. The poisonous substance in chocolate is theobromine, which can cause seizures, heart failure, and death in animals. There is more theobromine in baking chocolate than in sweet chocolate.

I do know that chocolate is lethal to dogs. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people are not aware of that. If your boyfriend does not believe you, tell him to just call the vets office and they will verify it with him over the phone.

yes chocolate is bad for dogs BUT -and there is a but- dogs have very strong enzymes in their stomach and tongues and can eat just about anything, my dog once eat a whole big bag of revels and the bag and survived, my other ate caustic soda (needed to spend night at vets) and my other eat a sponge frog. these are all laboradors but most dogs are pretty tough.

Oh god. I don't understand how some people still don't know it. My grandma treats this knowledge like no one in the WORLD knows it except her. I once made a little picture with Judge sleeping with a cup of cocoa and words "Judge Says: Cocoa is my favorite drink!" She wanted me to take it down, saying someone would think they could give their dogs cocoa! Lol.

The statement isn't that dogs 'can't' eat chocolate, because they will if you give it to them. They 'should not,' eat it. It is deadly for them to eat it. Tell him to look it up on the net and read it for himself.
