My dogs seem to love to eat each others poop in the winter time. We call these poop-sicles. It is a disgusting habit that we can't seem to break. Asked the vet about it and he said no particular reason for doing this, just some dogs do and some dogs don't. We try hard to make sure the poop in the yard is picked up daily, but they always seem to find some anyway. Has anyone had a similar problem and had any luck in breaking this habit?

There are two things that you can do. One is if you are feeding them "grocery dog food" ie. kibbles and bits, old roy, puppy chow..., then switch them over to something that is a premium dog food. When doing so they will a. eat less food, b. poop less, and c. get more vitamins and minerals. With the extra nutrients the dog will not feel like it needs the extra and wont eat poopcicles.

The second option isnt great but it has worked in the past. At your local petstore they should sell this stuff called "Forbid" it is used to make his/her poop taste bad, so they wont eat it. You can find this on the vitamin aisle. Hope this helps :)

It's interesting that they only eat them frozen? I have a dog that will only eat his own. So, as you do, we have to pick them up daily. The only thing that I have heard about dogs doing this, is that they are bored. Dogs who have a keen sense of smell supposedly do this more than others, as they want to find something. I have heard of people hiding things in their yard at a young age, such as treats, bones etc, for them to find opposed to their own waste! Not sure if it will work on dogs that have already had the habit for a long time though. I know people are saying on here that it is their diet, but I assure you my dog has a great diet. He would eat himself to death if he had the chance, and still enjoys this activity! I haven't found any taste that he doesn't like(hot sauces, cayenne pepper etc). Hmmm....

Coprophagy is the term for poop eating

1st of all if our dog is fun of it, we should bring them to their veterinarian for they might already having some internal problems

Poop Eating is due to:

1 - Indigestion - our dog might ate too much of what they can digest, and if the poop comes out or it was out for longer time already, it serves as ready-to-eat-meal when they get starve later on.

2 - Acknowledgment - dogs loves attention, some of them do crazy things just to get attention and we human do act immediately, sometimes we talk to them or touch them when we saw them eating poop.

3 - Scared to get Scolded - we don't like them to poop all over the place, sometimes we get mad and raise our voice, like us sometimes we hide evidence of sinfull act (depending on what reaction we think we will get) before someone caught us.

"by figuring out" why your dog do such thing, then there you yourself can think of "What you will need to do to stop it"

I hope it will help you to understand your dog more. :) Happy Dog Parenting!

Your not feeding them enough. Dogs tend to do this when theirs not enough food in their diet, if you feed them properly they should not do this.

It is believed it is to supplement their diet. Specifically their mineral intake.

IDONTCARE is wrong, they are not dumb animals, i am not totally sure why they do this, but from what i know most dogs do, idk how you can stop them either. i say just keep the poo cleaned up best you can and if they still get some then idk what to say.
