We have an adorable 5 month old puppy who was just diagnosed with roundworm. I am very concerned about my children or I contracting it. The stories on the web are scary. I'm wondering if someone out there has actually contracted it. Also, I'm wondering if folks who've had dogs with worms have scrubbed their entire house? Our puppy poops in the yard and we clean it up although I think my kids have missed a few small poops--now I'm worried the entire yard is contaminated and we should all stay out of it. This is really getting to me!!!!!
Thanks to anyone who can help me.

the rule is when your dog poos pick it up,its the eggs in the dogs poo from the roundworm that causes the problem,if they poo outside and its not picked up the eggs get into the soil and kids being kids can eat soil and that would be how they get it

AMY, OMG OMG OMG You and I are in EXACTLY the same boat. I have three kids 9, 6 and 2 and we just got a new 8 1/2 week old puppy and he's "full of worms" as the vet says.

Roundworms and he has giardia (rods? a bacteria)

Anyway, YEs the net is scaring the S&*# outta me!! It says:

*Interrupt the cycle by medicating several times over 4-6 weeks

*There is nothing that will KILL the eggs! Not even bleach!!!! so, there would be NOTHING a landscaper or anyone could do to clean our yards if there are eggs in the poop and also it says the eggs will STAY eggs for years and then will not "hatch" into larvae until in a host again ~ so, it's like these little monsters all over my yeard

*Dogs reinfect themselves when eating poo ~ hello!!?? We have puppies! They eat their own poo! We crate (quarantine in my daughter's old playpen) ours because of the kids and our other dog but he STILL POOPS WHEN WE'RE NOT AROUND and he EATS IT!!!! UGH, another infestation???

*Kids put their hands IN THEIR mouth, even before they come in to "wash them when done playing outside", right??

I am sorry I don't have any answers for you, I have been searching this topic for three days now and that's how I found YOUR question ~ I will definitely pop back in to see how we can be helped. but, until then, are YOUR hands burning from being dry after using all the antibacterial stuff?? MINE ARE!! lol no, for real, they are.

Good Luck and I'll let you know what else I find!

This is why it is important for kids to WASH THEIR HANDS when they come in from playing outside. And it is very important to have the pup dewormed properly and on a monthly heartworm prevention that also deworms to decrease infection. There are thousands of cases diagnosed each year but I haven't personally seen one.

Nope, but humans can get roundworm from
dogs & cats. You might want to contact a
business that does lawn spraying & see if they
have something to kill the roundworms.
