We have a Boxer-sharpei who barks at strangers approaching our home like he is going to tear their throat out. He growls (no teeth), takes an aggressive stance and pretty much scares the bejeezus out of whoever happens to be passing. The kicker is that if the person is brave enough to get close to him he immediately calms down and becomes submissive, rolling onto his back and pawing. I hate this because I don't want people to think he's a mean dog. I usually try to laugh it off and tell him that's no way to make friends, but he insists on acting like a tough guy. He's not aggressive at all. If he were, there is no way we would keep him around with two small children as even nice dogs can be unpredictable.

My question is, what causes this behaivor and is there anything I can do to correct it. We've tried firm "no"'s, tugs on his chain etc. I'm just at a loss. I caught the poor UPS guy near our door scared crapless throwing doggie bones at him.

I just got a german shepherd puppy 8 weeks old. I was wondering when is the correct age to leave them alone at home. I tested him today for about an hour & he cried really loud for a long time. I know this cant be healthy for him, so when is a good age or what is something I can do?

Her name is Sophie and although we haven't been owned by her for very long, she means the world to us especially my 6 year old son. She is currently at a pet hospital (has been since yesterday) and everything looks good so far. I will know more tonight and believe me I have a list of questions for the Vet. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had a dog with this and how their quality of life has been. Sophie had no prior symptoms before the incident that prompted us the seek medical attention, I think it may have been brought on by stress(she went for a haircut because the heat where I live was bothering her, vet said it was okay to do it) or possibly a reaction to the shampoo the groomer used.
I have been told that it is a genetic *disease* but I feel totally responsible for it happening because I got her hair cut. And here I thought I was helping her :(

ever since i left him home alone without him in a crate he acts more independent now... its not a bad thing its actually good that hes not so clingy and scared alone... lately he doesn't bark, bite, follow anymore he actually sleeps A LOT and he's not as hyper anymore... i've had him since he was 2 1/2 months and now he's almost 5 months... is this the age he becomes more mature? its just strange to me because he's not the same hyper clingy puppy i had last week... he eats fine so i don't think he's sick

My Collie Mix, Casey, is about 97 in dog years. She constantly yelps and twitches, and I know dogs do that in their sleep. But her eyes are open when she does it, and she's always staring at me. It really scares me, I think she's having a heart attack. It just started a few days ago, and it happens about 6 times a day. She has cataracts and arthritis in her hips. Is she dying? Here's a picture:

Please help, she's my best friend ever! :(

My mom got a new job, and my dad died, so she doesn't have time to take poor little Casey to the vet.

Yesterday and now today, my dog has had diarrhea. She never goes inside the house but now she has been waiting until I leave the room to go with this diarrhea. She's an eight year old Border Collie mix. What should I do? I called the vet and am going to make an appointment today once I know when I can get there but is there anything I should do now? I'm nervous about her but she seems to be acting fine, other than the diarrhea. The vet didn't tell me anything I should do when I called. I just want to do whatever is best to make sure she is okay before I can get to the vet.

i've had my dog for about 7 years already. yesterday, i wondered how much longer he would be able to live. does anyone know? he's a little overweight, but we're fixing that by giving him different dog food. he seems to be getting a little skinner. also, i have a pool in my backyard which is underground and i'm concerned that he might fall in and drown one day. its happened once or twice already, but my mom and brother were there to help him out.

I have a 2 year old Pit Bull that we've had since she was 5 weeks old. She's been socialized with people and other dogs since she was old enough to walk without falling over. When she was 6 months old, a dog at the dog park got in her face and started barking at her. He wouldn't let her do anything without barking at her and he even pinned her down and got in her face very loudly. Ever since then, but only with certain dogs, she makes the most horrible yelping sound like she's being beaten severely whenever these dogs come close; even just to say Hi! This past week, she actually snapped at another dog after the yelping happened. I'm afraid that if we don't do something about this behavior soon, it's going to turn aggressive towards other dogs. Any suggestions? We've tried just about everything we can think of. And she ruins the dog park experience for our other dogs because if she persists doing it while we're there, we leave and the other dogs don't get to play. HELP!!

I will be in a position to get a dog soon. I have a 2 year old, and he is very gentle with dogs. He's just a tad bit too exuberant with my sister in laws cats, but he is oh so gentle with my dad's old dog, he likes to sit beside it and talk to it.

I think a big sturdy dog would be good. I was considering an English bulldog, or a great dane maybe...
What breeds are good with kids?

Should I go for an adult or a puppy?

What are you opinions? I have a yorkie and she is about five pounds (maybe six) and we were using advantage until we kept spotting live fleas on her. I thought it was supposed to prevent fleas, so we are considering other brands. What are you opinions on Frontline Plus and K9 Advantix?

Ok well I already asked about potty training my puppy and I got some really good answers. I meant to also ask though when I take her out side should I have her on her harness and leash or just let her go free but keep an eye on her. We also have an outside dog and every time I take her outside to try and potty train her she gets distracted and wants to play with my other dog. Also about meal times for my puppy. Since we got her she has a little bit of dog food in her bowl 24-7 so she can eat when she wants to. I've heard that is bad and ur only supposed to feed them twice a day and take up the food in 15 minutes if they don't eat it. Well I tries that and well it confused her. She didn't understand when to eat and wouldn't eat when I gave it to her. She also constantly gets into the cat food. I scold her for that because I know its bad for her. How can I keep her away? And also I'm supposed to take her out after meal times to potty train her but she doesnt have meal times! SOMEONE HELP

I will be breeding my 2 dogs in a year or so. Right now, my female is too young so I want to wait. She has not had her first heat but we have been expecting it for some time now. She is almost or about a year old. She hasnt started bleeding BUT my male is constantly trying to hump her and the red part is coming out of him. She mostly wont let him but I have been watching them very closley this morning and it looks like he got it in for a sec. She HAS NOT started bleeding yet BUT, I heard that the male dog will know she is in heat BEFORE we will. I heard the female lets of signals before the bleeding. Is this true? is it time to seperate? they are now (as I type) but they are best friends so I dont want to seperate them unless I have too.
