Negative things that could happen from Puppy Mills.
Litters get mixed up so you are not getting the dog you think you are buying.
Puppy mills sell to places like Pet Land - and get high prices for the dogs
Puppy mills have guarentees that have loop holes in them -
Doing business with a reputable breeder you will get a fair market price - guarentees that they stand behind - no worry about disease - Can see the parents (or at least one) on site.
People in pet stores only know the bare minumum about the dogs... ask how many dogs they have titled or brought to champions... the majority are a joke.
Well, I could go on and on but check out some of the sites others have given you and go from there.
Good Luck

A puppy mill usually works hand-in-hand with most pet shops & vice versa. I hate to give you more bad news, but most (not all) breeders don't treat their animals any better than most of the puppy mills do! An honest breeder will have an open door policy for their clients to see the facilities where their animals are kept & bred. Go to a well known breeder that is in good standing by the ASPCA & the Better Business Bureau in your area. If you just want a dog without papers, then adopt one from your SPCA (ASPCA) or Animal Shelter.

OK, by now you know what puppy mills are. Awful places, incredible they still exist in this day and age. You get kitten mills too.
More and more people are becoming aware of puppy/kitten mills and are outraged by them, so hopefully their days of existence are numbered. In the meantime, there are probably charities and campaigns you can join to put an end to them if you're really up for that - I think info on these are probably in the links people have provided.
Try to make as many people as possible aware of puppy mills so that they don't buy from petshops. The only way this evil practice will really die is if people stop buying the puppies they supply. If you come across any petshops that supply dogs or cats, ask where they get them from and if it's puppy mills, or you suspect it is (some shops get them from 'puppy brokers' which are like a middle man between mills and pet shops) personally I would report them if they are knowingly selling pups from these places.

Puppy Mills are places that just breed to make money. Animals are kept inhumanely in crates with just enough food and water to keep them alive, Their sole purpose is to produce for money with no care or regard for the animals. Puppies are even transported in inhumane conditions and some die in transport. Most pet stores get their puppies from these places even though they say they don't. The only way to stop them is to stop buying from them, Please go to a breeder and check them out before buying a puppy. Make sure they are reputable. Even better you can find pure breeds in rescues and shelters (www.petfinder.com) The reason for alot of beagles & spaniels could be the result in a mill close by. Most puppy mills produce more then one breed. Oh, usually these puppy mill dogs & puppies have very little if any human contact or are socialise, makes for very confused dogs.

Puppy mills are the worst place that you can use to buy a dog. For a LONG list of reasons.
Breeders can be the best, however, you still need to do your homework. There are good breeders and bad breeders.
Pet stores are not a good source for dogs because they get their dogs to sell from puppy mills much of the time.
You want the person selling you a dog to know as much as possible about the dog and if there are any health problems in the lines.
Example. Let's assume you get a German Shepherd for free. Two years later, the dog needs hip surgery, or will have to be put to sleep. The hip surgery is going to cost you $1,500.00 to 3,000.00 per hip. So how much have you saved by getting a dog from unknown parentage.
Behavior issues, etc.
If you have no intention on showing the dog in conformation obedience, etc. you might want to look at saving a dog in a shelter.

A puppy mill is a place where they keep the puppies after they breed them. usually the cages are very small and they are not taken very good care of. It would be better to find a real breeder and not go to a puppy mill the puppies might be sick. This site might help :)

a puppy mill is a place where breeders breed puppies and then they dont care about them. they usually neglect them and beat them or dont take proper care of them (vets, shots, deworming, food..etc) they are really bad and if a puppy makes it thought one they can have serious health/ emotional issues. I bought my puppy from a breeder on a farm, but we think that the breeder was running a puppy mill of some sort beacuse when he went to get our dog he went behind a door and wouldnt let me come and i saw a whole bunch of kennels, and then our dog ended up with jahardia for like a long time. it was the worst. some pet stores are ok. most of the dogs their probably arent from a mill, but some of them still tend to get sick. but not always. adoption places are ususally safer because they check the pet for diseases and stuff like that. if you want to get a dog i suggest adoption but make sure you know the puppies history first.

Puppy mills are HORRIBLE place that breed and breed and breed dogs just for profit. They are usually very bad conditions for a dog and there are lots of animals in a tight place. The puppies or dogs don't usually have shots and probably have spread sickness like flies, worms, sinus infection, kennel cough, etc. I would highly recommend adopting a puppy from a better place, where the animals are actually taken care of.

Puppy mills are breeders who care nothing for the puppies. Their one and only concern is making money. They don't care if their puppies are healthy....out of sight, out of mind. Very often (not always) the puppies in pet shops are from puppy mills. Your best bet is adopting from a reputable breeder. If you're not sure, check with local rescue groups and your vet for recommendations.
