I have a 2 year old Pit Bull that we've had since she was 5 weeks old. She's been socialized with people and other dogs since she was old enough to walk without falling over. When she was 6 months old, a dog at the dog park got in her face and started barking at her. He wouldn't let her do anything without barking at her and he even pinned her down and got in her face very loudly. Ever since then, but only with certain dogs, she makes the most horrible yelping sound like she's being beaten severely whenever these dogs come close; even just to say Hi! This past week, she actually snapped at another dog after the yelping happened. I'm afraid that if we don't do something about this behavior soon, it's going to turn aggressive towards other dogs. Any suggestions? We've tried just about everything we can think of. And she ruins the dog park experience for our other dogs because if she persists doing it while we're there, we leave and the other dogs don't get to play. HELP!!

When she sees another dog give her a treat and if she starts barking, immediately turn around and walk in the opposite direction. You have to do this every time. Eventually she should learn not to bark and you can approach strange dogs with out her yelping.

My pit puppy was very similar when he was younger because he was bullied at the dog park by larger dogs, but he grew out of it after he got older. We continued to take him around other dogs and socialize him, so that might be why he eventually got over his fears of other dogs. Maybe a little more socialization will help her get over her fears?

The best advice I can give is to re-socialize her with dogs again and correct the inappropriate behavior as it happens. In time she should get better. She sounds like the bully dog just traumatized her pretty good. Give her time and keep working with her. Good Luck.

Fear biting. She obviously never got over the attack when she was a puppy.

It's a very real problem - and as you can see, potentially dangerous.

Both you and she could use some special training with a behavior therapist who specializes in fear biting. Perhaps your vet can recommend someone.

It will take time - but she will make improvements.

Good luck!

You need to work with her on animal socialization. She'll be able to tell if your anxious aroung other animals and she'll react the same way you are. You could try enrolling in training classes at petsmart. She'll learn tricks as well as socialization. Also could try a behaviorist. Kind of expensive but worth it.
