Val, it's a fallacy that feeding raw meat makes dogs vicious. I've fed a raw diet for 13 years, and my dogs have super temperaments. I have also raised litters on raw. How you can believe in natural, but not raw? The diet I feed is below:-
RAW CHICKEN WING DIET FOR DOGS
The following is based on a dog weighing 25lb. (11kilo) Adjust accordingly for your dogs weight. For pups, adjust for weight, then multiply by two.
MORNING
Roughly 1/2 to 2/3 SMALL MUG ( 1 – 1 1/2oz) PORRIDGE OATS
pinch Lo-salt
Soak above overnight with cold water; in morning add:-
1 Mug (2 1/2 to 3 ozs oz) cooked vegetables [ See Notes.]
4 Philips Brewers Yeast tablets.
1 teaspoon desiccated coconut.
1 teaspoon Cold pressed Sunflower oil. (Five days per week.)
1 teaspoon cod liver oil. (Two days per week.)
1 - 1 1/2 ozs offal [ See Notes.]
1 100iu Vit E capsule once per week.
EVENING
9ozs MINCED RAW CHICKEN WINGS, 5 days per week.
7ozs MINCED BEEF, 2 days per week.
4 Brewers Yeast tablets.
Notes:-
Vegetables. Give a good selection over the week of veg that's in season. E.g. Carrots, turnip, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, etc.
Offal. Give a selection of heart, kidneys, liver, tripe, over the week.

Well, Dave, if you have seen dogs do badly on a barf diet, then whoever is feeding that diet is not doing it right......I have not had an illness in any of my dogs in 13 years.....note that, not one vet bill in that time.
Vita stands by the dog food companies. Well, more fool you. Dogs are **dying** in their thousands because of dog food companies.....just visit the K9 Kidney list for one.

I've fed all types of diets from home prepared to super premium commercial, but not BARF. Why? Because after all the studying, asking billions of questions of people that do feed BARF I do not see where it is equal to or superior to any other diet. I've actually seen dogs do very poorly on a BARF diet, but also seen that with good commercial foods.
I don't understand the "ALL NATURAL". I can give you a list of "natural" foods that will kill your dog. Cyanide is natural, onions are natural, but they kill. If it were not for being processed to preserve food we would have an epidemic of food poisoning and related maladies. Just because it is processed or has an artificial vitamin C doesn't make it bad. I would trust the product more because of that.

When my pup is older I want to do a RAW diet. BARF sounds like a good diet, but RAW just seems more natural to me, because how often would a dog raid a vegetable garden in the wild?

I'm a chi breeder also, I think natural is always better but I personally do not believe in feeding raw meat. We domesticated these animals for a reason. They no longer have to fight or forage for food, I don't want them going back to that. That's just my personal opinion, and I've never had a dog coming from my house bite or even snap.

Way too much work. I love my dog, but he isn't going to eat better than me. I stand behind the dog food companies. Companies like Iams have nutritional scientists doing in depth studies into pet nutrition.
And..... I know people are scared because of the food recalls. As a food scientist, I see way more domestic related problems/illnesses with food (ie, improper storage, cross contamination, improper cooking methods) than I do with industrial production. What I am saying is that I would be more hesitant to use raw products (like BARF) for the risk of contamination before I worried about reputable brands like BilJac.

I highly recommend Dr. Billinghurst's BARF diet. It is really the best food choice out there, all natural, no wheat gluten, corn or carbohydrate laden cereal ingredients . Here is his website: http://www.barfworld.com/ for more information!!
Hope this helps!

Even though I've given them the occasional chicken back or turkey neck, I'm not really comfortable with giving that to them on a regular basis. However, I am experimenting with homemade cooked diets.

I think prey model style feeding is better. Dogs are CARNIVORES. Look it up. Carnivores are meat eaters, so why feed veggies? What a waste of time and energy.

This group can help you get started rawfeeding a prey model diet:

Good luck, and I commend you for trying to do what is best for the dogs.
