Frontline. You could even use less than a full tube. Just try to use the least amount possible to do the job. These things do have side effects.

Advantix does kill fleas that get on the animal (it's an adulticide) but it's not always enough to use an adulticide alone because it doesn't treat all stages of the flea lifecycle - fleas will lay eggs in your carpet which will hatch and jump on your dog - they will die after they bite him, but they will still be around. You need to treat the environment too.
I consider Frontline Plus a better product because it does what Advantix does (kills ticks and adult fleas) but it also kills flea eggs and pupae, so it treats the environment too.
I advise you - and in fact everyone with a cat or dog - to spray your house to kill adult fleas in the carpet, and then again a few days later to kill the eggs that have hatched, and then use Frontline Plus regularly - it only has to be used every two months in dogs, and it treats both the animal and the environment. Just make sure it gets on the dog's skin, not the fur!

EDIT: re: iluvtorofl's answer - you MUST use the full tube supplied when using Frontline, or the animal will not get enough of the product for it to work! They come in different sized pipettes for different sized cats and dogs, you just pick the appropriate one for your animal (a vet will provide you with the correct pack) and you need to use it all. Yes, some flea products have side effects (pet shop ones mostly) but Frontline is probably the safest as it is not systemic (only acts on the skin).

Advantix because it does everything Frontline + does but it also repels mosquitos.
Visit Dog.com and click on Flea Control. It has a wonderful comaparison table for 5 or 6 of the most popular brands. And the prices are great!

Just like human medications, not every flea and tick preventative is going to work the same for every dog. For instance, I used K9 Advantix on my puppy for one month. I think it attracted the fleas instead of killing them! My coworker uses it on her dog and she hasn't had any problems at all. I started Frontline and so far so good. I've always used revolution in the past, but my new vet doesn't carry it. This was awesome b/c it was for prevention of fleas/ticks/mosquitoes and heartworms. But I'm doing just fine with Frontline Plus and Heartguard.

I took my dog to the vet after we got back from camping because I was afraid she had ticks.
The vet said that she only recommends Frontline as the other products are so incredibly toxic that she has literally had animals (dogs and cats) die as a result. She said she mainly see's liver and kidney damage as a result of using the other products and death although possible was a rarity.
She said that all the products will not prevent all fleas and ticks however the best product to use was Frontline.
The other products go systemic, which means the effects could last for quite some time.

Am trying Advantix for the first time this summer. Got it on sale.
So far, I can't see much difference in Advantix and Frontline. We have lots of mosquitoes so thought I would give it a try.l
No problems and no fleas or ticks.

Hey there!
I took my dog Stella to the vet at the beginning of the month. I asked for the Frontline plus, and the vet tech told me that they don't reccomend it. I asked why and she said we're getting a lot of clients coming in with flea infestations. She reccomended K-9 Advantix, and its been working great!
I think what's happened is that the fleas are becoming immune to the frontline.
Good luck with your baby yorkie :)

K9 Advantix is supposed to both repel and kill mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks.
Frontline Plus only kills fleas and ticks.
At least, that's what their advertising claims. Personally, I use Frontline Plus and don't have any problems.
