My female Cocker Spaniel has entered her first heat cyle, she is 5 months young. I was caught off guard and spent much of yesterday cleaning the carpet after her. I have seperated her from our male Cocker Spaniel because she is too young. I have her outside on the deck and I have made it as comfortable as possible. I spend time with her and give her special treats and rub her back.
She seems miserable and cries a lot.
I would greatly appreciate any insight and suggestions on how to make this not so trumatic for her and for me. She has outgrown her crate, so I have nothing to keep her inside in.I don't want to risk our male getting to her before her body is ready for him and puppies.
I read on the internet that the heat cycle could last 2 weeks...is this accurate ?
Thank you so much in advance.
p.s. I brought our older female Lab to keep her company and hopefully to comfort her. Our Lab was nuetered and never went through what my female Cocker Spaniel is experiencing.

I posted a link in my first question about my missing dog Cheyenne which was the wrong link - i don't know how that happened - but if you live in Wa. State or any where close - or travel or know anyone here - please help us spread the word.
You can read all her info and see all her pictures at this new link. http://www.dogster.com/dogs/521876
We are offering a large reward for her safe return home. Please write if you can help by crossposting her info at vets, pet stores, groomers, shelters, rescues etc... She has been missing for over two months and could be anywhere - she is truely like a child to us - and we refuse to just give up on her.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my first post about her and for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers - we are truely grateful.

Yes, we are planning on breeding her. Thanks. No lectures on spaying please. She is a beautiful, super smart, show quality Sheltie with people that already have given us their numbers for pups!

My younger Min Pin loves ALL his toys, he is absolutely obsessed with them and if you take them away he actually cries! His favorite are stuffed animals that make the actual animal noise, like his "Froggie". He's spoiled rotten and so cute. My older one likes rope toys, he will chew on them for hours. He also likes the bones that are sold with peanut butter or other things inside, they keep him busy too. So what is your dogs (or any pet for that matter) favorite toy?

My dog Molly, broke her foot 2 weeks ago & chewed up her 1st cast & after they wrapped it up again they put a big plastic white collar on her so that she can't chew up her cast again she really needs to wear it b/c she was going nuts chewing every chance she got. We tried lots of things before wefinally had to resort to the collar, socks & bags ect. Anyway now it's been on for 5days and I have been taking it off for a few minutes each night to let her get a break and I rub her neck and shoulders but she starts chewing on it as soon as I stop petting her so I have to put the thing back on. What can I do to make her feel better? She can't reach her ears to scratch them & she I know her bandage itches too. I feel bad that shes catch get any relief & its so AKWARD Other than that she is managing well playing with the cats & running, a little more weight on her broken leg each day. Eating drinking poop & PP is norm. I just want any ideas to make the collar more bearable- 4 wks to go.

She is and American Eskimo. The cough is now on it's third round. The first was about a year ago. One day she just woke up, coughing. It sounds awful and you can tell it gives her discomfort but we don't know what to do or what it is. The first round ended within two months, suddenly again. We were happy and just though of it as a fluke. Then it came again in February. The vets we went to had no explanation, even after several X-rays and exams. Nothing. After about three weeks that round stopped. And then one week ago - it's back. It seems more controlled this time and it seems to heighten with excitement, although it usually happens at random times. The cough starts out small , gradually grows larger, and then peaks and dies down again to nothing. I have gone as far as to sing to her to get it to stop - I'm desperate. I work from home and am on the phone for a large portion of the time so I need this fixed. If this sounds familiar AT ALL to anyone please, please help me out! I NEED it

My dog is 10 and I started brushing them when she was about 8, I brush them very infrequently, because she is so difficult and she angers me so much. But her mouth is gross, she has had the oral teeth cleaning surgery and I am trying to maintain it, but it's so hard and to top it off I suspect she eats crap so that really upsets me, I thought I broke her from that, maybe it's the old age, she has changed so much and not in good ways. When I brush her teeth she licks and chomps. and I have a hard time prying her mouth open, please help. If there are any vets reading this your imput would be a godsend.

Thanks

The pet shop is where I got her from. They told me the breeder is in another state. And I have no idea about her history. etc. I think it's a normal cold cause the guy at the pet store said they are prone to getting them when they are in new surround (my home since. I got her yesterday) would it be that?

My friend has two guard dogs who got into a fight, they're both purebred German Shepherds and one has a giant gash, about two and a half to three inches long and the same wide. Her dad wont take it to the vet because it's not lisenced, and we've done all we can to try and convince him too. We've put peroxide on it, bandaged it up, got it stitched up by our friend who's a nurse, put a muzzle on her but she ripped the stitches out twice.

We really don't want to put the dog down as she is still young. We just want to know if there's anything we can do other then killing her.

Even if we have to put her down, we're going to try whatever we can first, does anyone have any ideas?

Also, please don't send be bitchy answers as my friend is only 13 and already very upset about it. Me and her are trying our best but we can't take the dog to the vet ourselves, so please don't blame us for her dads actions. Thanks

This is Kaya. She's 2 years old, weighs about 50 lbs, and has medium length, fine, silky, sparkly hair with a little wave in it. She has freckles and these bizarre eyes- depending on the light they're either lavender or GREEN! I've never seen a dog with green eyes before. She points when she sees a small animal or bird. (I didn't teach her to do this) She's a rescue from the shelter I volunteer with but originally came from Kentucky. Best guess they had was Lab/Pointer. Now, I definitely see the lab- But Pointer? She doesn't have the jowls, her tail's not that long, and the silky hair and little, turned-up snout...my best guess was Lab/Brittany Spaniel. As I said, just curious...What do you guys think her heritage is?

She doesn't have normal marking of a Boston though. Half of her face is white and the other is red and brown!!! Her entire mouth and snot is white also. On her white parts of her face, there is a pinkish hue, especially around her mouth and eye. I was wondering if this is a food allergy, environmental allergy or just from being hot. Any Thoughts!!!!

ok not sure in which category this belongs as it involes relationships and dogs.
i'll just give it a shot.
my husband thinks he is the alpha dog and i do not agree with that.
my 2 rescued dogs are very fearful of him, one of them won't even come to him and runs away from him. they do not listen to him, don't follow him around the house, don't want to sleep next to him. they do all this with me. but he thinks he is alpha dog because they cower walk towards him. they don't play with him either.
i feed them, walk them 3 times a day where as he only does it once a day and i take them to the stables where i ride with me everyday and let them have a run around.
now i have had dogs all my life. these are his first!
do you think he is alpha dog? i don't think he is but how do i tell him without hurting his feelings. he very touchy about this subject.. very proud man! help! ;o)
thanks for good answers!

he threw up sunday last week 5X. took him to the vet, they did an xray and blood work, it was negative. He still was not eating, tried boiled chicken and rice, he was not interested. He threw up tues once, took him back to his regular vet friday. Ho fever, no lymph node enlargement. No abd pain on palpation. She gave me reglan and I/D hills prescription diet. He was still not eating. When I take him out for walks he's fine, sniffing, peeing, not pooping a lot of course. He's not his usual self at home though, just sleeping and not playing. Took him to the Park on sunday he was fine. Walking, little running, then we go thime he drank water then threw uop 30mins after. Took him back to the vet Sunday, still no fever. Now I am force feeding him A/D diet but he will spit it out when he gets the chance. I am confused. Today was the first day he did not throw up. I want him to be interested in his food again and not throw up. what am I gonna do?

I have a 1 year old jack russell terrier puppy and she's had her 1st heat back at the end of February. I was wondering if anyone knows how long between heats. We're going on vacation in the middle of August and our sitter doesn't want to watch the dogs if the pup is in heat again. Our male jack russell humps everything in sight when she was in heat and it's not very fun being around if you're not it's "parents" I guess. Is there a way to predict it?! I just kinda want to be prepared here. Help if you can.
Thanks!
