My friend has two guard dogs who got into a fight, they're both purebred German Shepherds and one has a giant gash, about two and a half to three inches long and the same wide. Her dad wont take it to the vet because it's not lisenced, and we've done all we can to try and convince him too. We've put peroxide on it, bandaged it up, got it stitched up by our friend who's a nurse, put a muzzle on her but she ripped the stitches out twice.
We really don't want to put the dog down as she is still young. We just want to know if there's anything we can do other then killing her.
Even if we have to put her down, we're going to try whatever we can first, does anyone have any ideas?
Also, please don't send be bitchy answers as my friend is only 13 and already very upset about it. Me and her are trying our best but we can't take the dog to the vet ourselves, so please don't blame us for her dads actions. Thanks

I have 7 dogs also and I have told him that they don't need to be licensed, and he believes me because we even phoned the vet and asked. I don't exactly know why he doesn't want it to go to the vet, because he has the money and it's no problem getting there.
DON'T try to blame this on me, we've done all we can and it's up to the dad, we're trying to get her mom to report him to the Humane Society, and if worst comes to worst we'll do it ourselves because we love this dog.
My moms friend is a vet but she's away on holiday and we can't get ahold of her. Trust me, he wont take this dog to the vet, I just don't think he cares that much. We're not saying the dog will die from the cut, but it WILL have to be put down if we cant fix it..

Take the dog to the vet. It is not like they are going to call the police because you don't have a license!!! NOT taking the dog is called animal cruelty & that is a crime!!! The dog needs stitches & antibiotics!!! You can NOT heal a wound this big on your own!!!

The other respondants are correct- a license means nothing to a vet. He's like an emergency room technician who doesn't care if his patient is a drug dealer or a Nobel Prize winner. What matters to a vet is up-to-date shots.
Unfortunately, I don't know of a vet who will treat a dog without a rabies shot, particularly one with an open, festering wound. Is the dog current on the rabies? If it is, then get an adult (aunt, uncle, neighbor, shelter volunteer) to help you take the dog to the nearest vet, explain the situation, and beg for help. If the dog is represented by a child, the vet may cut the cost of services or just bill the father. I'm sure Dad will be shocked to get a bill, but he can't contest it legally- the animal is his because his child is a minor. If the dog has no rabies- more difficult but not unsurmountable. Call your nearest animal rescue or pound and see if they will give it a rabies shot or direct you to a clinic that will give a rabies shot. Then go directly to the vet with the paperwork and beg.
You're doing the right thing and I really hope this situation will work out for you...If all else fails, make an anonymous call to the police and report a case of animal abuse. The fines the father will incur are far higher than a shot and a vet visit. And the dog will get treatment, although it might not be returned to an owner who won't care for it.
It angers me that people think animals are disposable and not subject to pain...I hope your friend's dad stubs his toe a good one some night...and then can't get a doctor...
Good Luck Sweetie...we're with you!

i have never met a vet who cared if the dog was licensed with the town or not. And unfortunatley as you know it needs vet care. You seem to have done all you can do for it at home. That is clean the wound. You may want to try covering the wound somehow so the dog doesn't bother with it. However it is going to probally get badly infected without antibiotics anyway.

Poor thing, I know where your coming from. Its never happend to me but I kinda know how you feel.
Just keep it really clean. Go to a dollar store or anywhere and buy peroxcide, neosporin anibacterial kind, large guaze pads enough to change about 3 times a day for a week, anibacterial soap, liquid bandage or superglue, gloves, and a tape that I think is called surgical or something. You should find it. if not use clear tape.
Just clean it when you wake up with the soap and warm water wash it out for about 5 minutes. Then put the ointment on with the gloves, and put the pad on it with the tape. You really need to cut the fur as much as you can around the wound at least 1 inch around the whole thing, you can use sissors and try as much as you can and then clean the shaved area clear of bacteria. The tape may stick then, but if not go around the tummy, it may look funny but do it.Do this for about 3 days,
Then take the liquid bandage or super glue and hold the skin towards her, and put the glue on the ouside while the skin is in place. If you cant find anything ask someone who works there. I would really reccomend a walmart, or drug store. Tell me how everything goes, and if you really wanted to go to a petsore and buy bitter apple spray if she keeps nipping at it. or experiment with viniger for alcohol. Put a bit on top of the bandage, or fur when you glue it.
Do this only until your mom friend comes back, then take it straight to her.
Why would he take her to a vet to put her down, and not to save her???
And if hes being a brute,go to a neighbor or a friends house and tell them to call animal control or a vet and tell them whats happening. I hope everything goes well.
PLEASE kepp me updated.

Who is not licensed, the dog for rabies or the vet is not licensed?
It doesn't matter, the vet will take care of the dog!
It's like going to the hospital (ER) and you not having insurance, they can't turn you away.
When your dad brings the dog in, they are going to tell him that he will have to update all of the dog's shot.
If the vet is not licensed, then go to someone else.
Get the dog help ASAP!! Infections may set in.

When has a vet asked to see a dog's license?? I have never been asked if my dog is licensed? They want to make sure a dog has a rabies shot, but they aren't going to ask about licensing..
Why would the answer be to put the dog down because she has a gash? How about reporting him for neglecting to provide proper vet care for a dog?!? That would solve the problem..

Will your friend take the dog to a group like the ASPCA or SPCA? They will treat dogs who don't have licenses, but then your friend might have to surrender the dog to them. The longer this goes on... it becomes a matter of animal cruelty, and the father can be charged and face jail time or a large fine.
If you can't get it care, then I'd say give the dog to someone who can. Sorry, but guard dogs deserve proper care also. Worst comes to worse, you can report the father to the authorities to get the proper care necessary for the dog.
Good luck.

You need to report your friends father to the authorities. At the very least the dog will be helped and given a good home elsewhere and you will prevent any other animals from suffering the same fate as this dog. He will have a history of animal cruelty and they will be aware of of him. You have done your best for the dog. It needs help now lest the wound cause major problems. The last thing you want is for the dog to die in agony.

Only one my my dogs is licensed for our town and my vet has never ever even asked if they are. Vets don't care. Vets want to take care of injured and sick and healthy animals. Tell your friend to tell her dad to take the dog to the vet.
Petco and Petsmart sell Elisabethan collars (the biiiiiig circular things that go on dogs necks to prevent them from ripping out stiches). If the dad refuses to take the dog to the vet then have the nurse wash wash wash wash wash it out (dogs mouths carry LOTS of bacteria). sew it up, and put the Elisabethan collar on it.
But here's something your friend needs to mention. If that wound gets infected or the dog needs to be put down, that can cost a WHOLE lot more than a simple vet visit to heal a wound.

What about a vet making a house call? Friends that work with animals? Try everything to save the dog!
