My dog Molly, broke her foot 2 weeks ago & chewed up her 1st cast & after they wrapped it up again they put a big plastic white collar on her so that she can't chew up her cast again she really needs to wear it b/c she was going nuts chewing every chance she got. We tried lots of things before wefinally had to resort to the collar, socks & bags ect. Anyway now it's been on for 5days and I have been taking it off for a few minutes each night to let her get a break and I rub her neck and shoulders but she starts chewing on it as soon as I stop petting her so I have to put the thing back on. What can I do to make her feel better? She can't reach her ears to scratch them & she I know her bandage itches too. I feel bad that shes catch get any relief & its so AKWARD Other than that she is managing well playing with the cats & running, a little more weight on her broken leg each day. Eating drinking poop & PP is norm. I just want any ideas to make the collar more bearable- 4 wks to go.

They make soft ones. Like the one you have only made out of a stiff cloth.

They are super chewable, so only have the soft one on when you can watch her, but they are so much more comfortable for the little guys.

They are mostly for cats, but you have a "cat sized" dog, so it shouldn't be a problem. So go to www.drsfosterandsmith.com and look in the cat/medical center.

Try padding around the neck but realistically she will be uncomfortable until the cast comes off. If she is directly supervised the collar can come off but if you can't stop the chewing then it must stay.

You can try keeping her on leash when the collar is off and redirect her with something she loves like a good bone, dinner or toy. If she starts chewing calmly say no and redirect. If that doesn't work you will just need to leave the collar on. She will be back to normal in no time if she leaves it alone.

Well, she should be confined and not running or playing with the cats--that will slow down healing of a broken bone. The collar is needed--she'll get used to it in time. Make sure your vet is checking the splint at least once a week--a splint that slips a little and is not fitted correctly can become very painful and make sores. Some dogs will chew at splints because they are causing pain from a sore. Not much else you can do!

She will get used to it. And just keep in mind, what's best for her - regardless of what she wants. Sometimes mom's have to put their "kids" through difficult situations because it is what is best. It's good that you give her a break. But do NOT let her chew on that cast!

Good luck!
