You will have to check with your home owners insurance. But a lot of them are against some of the greatest dogs. Here is a site that rates dogs with children.

I have a Beagle and an APBT and they are great with children. The first time my daughter brought my latest grandson over for a visit, one month old, she put him on the floor in his carrier. The Pit went over to check him out and then spent the next hour laying by him. She would not leave his side.

Long list above... nice copy & paste job. lol
Golden Retriever. There has never been a recorded malicious bite from a golden anywhere in the US (unless provoked). That says a lot! My source on that is the Golden Retrievers for Dummies book. Also, we have a five year old golden and he is GREAT with our kids (ages 7, 9 and 11). So our youngest was 2 when we had him. He is a great indoor dog and fairly calm except when guests come around.
Suggestion: whatever breed, crate train your dog. Good luck!

Boxers are rated very high in their compatibility with children. I have a 2 year old boxer as well as 5 children ranging in ages from 3-14 and she is excellent with all of them. I have not heard of boxers being aggressive towards children although as with any animal I am sure there are cases out there, I just have never heard it. They are a med to large breed dog depending on their bloodlines. They are also hyper but highly trainable. I would suggest what ever breeed you choose that you research it completely so you know both their good and bad characteristics. The akc website is a very good resource to check breed characteristics and compatibility. You can also go to your local shelter and speak with an adoption counselor for advise on choosing the right breed for your family. There is more to consider than just if they are good with kids or not you also shouldmake sure the breed does well in what ever environment you home is and your lifestyle. Larger breeds need more exercise and strength. Smaller breeds need less exercise and do well in smaller homes but may not be as good with children. We also have 2 chihuahuas and although ours are good with children not all are. They are also more fragile to rough housing with children. My kids have been taught always to be gentle with animals but not all children know that and tend to be a little rougher with their pets. My chihuahuas are also litter box trained so if we are running late at work I do not have to worry about an accident on my floor. So keep all of that in mind when choosing a dog. I highly suggest going to your local shelter and checking on a dog there, most shelter to aggresion testing on the dogs they adopt out and have both mixed and pure bred dogs. That is the best place to look in my opinion.

German Shepards and Golden Retrievers are great with small children but may be to big for what you want. Any dog may increase your homeowners ins but some more then others but can you put a pricetag on protecting your children.

dachshund... they are wonderful family dogs and are very people, animal, and kid friendly
check out the AKC website for the breed info. Search around the I-NET for other information. Good luck!
p.s. just a word of advice.. DO NOT get a chihuahua.. for the most part they do very poorly around small kids. Mine is the sweetest thing around grown ups but whenever a kid under 12 comes around he goes into attack mode.

if u dont want to increase the premium on her home owners policy, its better to get a smaller dog. (most probably) Most dogs are really friendly and like children. My parents had(and still have) a cocker spaniel(i think) and she was really friendly and liked me alot. She kinda protected me too. Like a minature Schnauzer(my fave), golden retrievers are really friendly but are big, cocker spaniels are nice too.

Bichon Frise. Very bouncy, hardy, playful and cheerful.

The West Highland Terrier is another smallish breed that should get along well with both children and neighbors.

Or she can take an online breed quiz:

Beagles are excellent with people. They are very friendly and sweet natured. You can get purebred puppies from the tons of beagle rescues out there. They're a really popular breed, so there are a lot of them.

wow that is a long list above... lol
i would suggest any dog that is not too large or too small... large might hurt the child (even by accident) and the small might be hurt by the child. maybe a jack russell, beagle, bichon, or corgi!
