Anything over 10 is considered geriatric for a small dog. For a large dog anything over 7, medium is 8. Of course dachshunds can live to be 12 to 16 but remember anything over 10 is in fact geriatric. What you will want to do starting at 9, you will want to start getting blood tests done at least one a year to catch any aging problems early on. If it is caught early you can place him on a prescription diet. Knowing ahead of time is the best way to keep him here longer. Also regular teeth cleaning. A bad mouth from dirty teeth causes bacteria to go into his organs and causes them to become infected causing a faster death in the long run (kidney failure and others). So you want to make sure you have annual teeth cleanings. Hopefully you have been doing this all along.

Hes a dog all dogs can swim and if for whatever reason he can dont let him run loose around the pool put him on a long leash. But they usually live 10-15 years depending on health my mother in law has a mini dachshund and she wears a life jacket when going near water or for a ride on the kayak....

At least 15 years. I've had several live to 17 years. You need to protect the dog from the pool. I can't believe the dog "fell" in several times. Dogs don't just fall in, it must have entered on purpose. Maybe you can get a pool cover or at least get one of those alarms that sounds if someone enters the pool and makes waves.

If you take care of it well it can live for at least 15 years. Little dogs live longer then bigger dogs, and the least my big dogs lived til was 16. I'd plan for a long time for a small dog like that.
Get him out every day for walk, and train him, old dogs love to learn new tricks, it keeps their mind going and they actually learn far faster then young dogs.
Dogs have been living longer and longer.

Small dogs live longer than big dogs. A dachshund might live to be 15 or 18 years old if you take good care of him.

Dachshunds can live a long time- up to 15 years. If your dog can't swim, put something up to keep him out of the water or put a life vest on him.
