Dominance I'm afraid, that dog needs to be under control. If it had gone for one of mine I would have had plenty to say I can assure you.

I have never been a mother or a Pit Bull owner; but I do know that a Pit Bull who bites or behaves in a manner that can be construed as aggressive is going to be dealt with more severity from public authorities than might a Cocker Spaniel or Miniature Schnauzer. Please get a handle on the situation and learn to control your puppy. If you haven't taken him to Obedience Class, start now; or better yet, go to a trainer who has experience with Pit Bulls. You can probably teach him to go "Down" even now, with treats; and when he starts snapping or barking at you, make him do a Down; that would be a good start. If your dog is this protective with you when you try to pick up your own toddler, how will he react when other children visit and play with your little boy? Think about that. See a professional, or put a muzzle on the poor dog all the time; which would be a sad life for the dog...

Yes i agree with you, as much as we love our dogs they should be treated as dogs and not over protected or spolit rotten. This dog that went for your puppy sounds like a local bully, the owner obviously has no sense to keep there dog on the lead or to seek help and doesn't care less about the impact there dog has on other dogs and people. Unfortunatly there seems to be more and more of these types of owners, who have no knowledge of dogs. Many dogs readily pick up on body language, and most dogs usually tolerate a puppy as they are no threat. The best advice is to stay away from that area were the dog walks, or go at different times.

When my little cocker spaniel was a pup he was constantly being bullied by other dogs - I think their animal instinct kicks in and bigger and older dogs might pick on the young ones! My dog is now three and sometimes he plays lovely with other dogs and other times, some dog will pick on him or visa versa!. I let them have their run around and then just walk away and call him - you don't want to instill fear in your pup by overprotecting him. The other dog owner sounds like he has a problem dog - unfortunately, some owners just aren't responsible but there is not much you can do other than stay away from them.

A dog will usually attack or threaten to attack if it feels threatened or if it perceives someone as being on it's territory. Some dogs will attack if you're too close. Also, dogs have personalities just like people so if they've been trained to be mean they will. The best thing is not to make any threatening moves but also don't run because dogs love to chase. If a dog is close and growling, stand still.

Hi there,
The same thing happened to me when my dog was a pup, we were just walking happily along i had him on the lead and we went round the corner where we bumped into a bigger dog it growled at him and my dog hid behind my legs. It then carried on walking then it just turned back jumped on my dog and bit him. The woman said that her dog felt threatened by my dog because IT WAS ON A LEAD!!!
It has happened several times since and now my big boy growls back,

It's all about the other dog being the dominate animal. They are just showing your "young pup" who is boss. The owner should be cited if he is not obeying the leash law to the fullest. Especially if it shows aggression toward a child. He should have never let the young girl get close to his dog in the first place.

some dogs love people but hate other dogs and it is in their nature to attack other dogs. Some dogs like the one in the park should be put to sleep because they are a danger to other dogs as well as people. If my dog ever snapped at a child for no reason he would be a goner even though I know he would never do something like that.

And some dogs like chow chows do not smell like dogs to other dogs. Whenever I walk my chow chow other dogs always try to attack him because he smells strange and the other dogs get confused. They can't tell if he is a real dog or not so they attack out of fear. My chow has never attacked anything.

The owner patted the dog on the head - praise. How is this dog meant to know better?

be careful when you see this dog! dog is not in control.ask the owner to not let his dog near yours! by petting him after these incidents the owner is reinforcing the behavior! try another place to walk dog or a different time!

The dog that is attacking thinks he owns the territory and he is defending it ,tell the dog owner to keep his/ her dog on its leash or you will report him as being a nuisance.
