We have a Boxer-sharpei who barks at strangers approaching our home like he is going to tear their throat out. He growls (no teeth), takes an aggressive stance and pretty much scares the bejeezus out of whoever happens to be passing. The kicker is that if the person is brave enough to get close to him he immediately calms down and becomes submissive, rolling onto his back and pawing. I hate this because I don't want people to think he's a mean dog. I usually try to laugh it off and tell him that's no way to make friends, but he insists on acting like a tough guy. He's not aggressive at all. If he were, there is no way we would keep him around with two small children as even nice dogs can be unpredictable.

My question is, what causes this behaivor and is there anything I can do to correct it. We've tried firm "no"'s, tugs on his chain etc. I'm just at a loss. I caught the poor UPS guy near our door scared crapless throwing doggie bones at him.

We have no other problems with him other than typical puppy type issues with chewing and occassional accident on the carpet. Please help!

My dogs do that & I really don't have a problem with it. They are doing their job!!! Why would you want your dog to stop telling strangers that they can not come near your home without your invite?

You can try teaching him a quiet command, and if he doesn't listen spritz him in the face with a little water bottle. Also praise him when he is quiet. When I spray my own dog with water, it's just a light little spray, lighter than the spray from a Windex bottle, but she is so afraid of getting sprayed that even when I reach for it, she stops barking. She even hunkers down like she's really afraid. It makes me feel bad about it, but I know it works and it'll make the neighbors happier.

I have 2 German Shepherds that act aggressively when ever anyone comes near the house. I personally like this - as it alerts me if there is someone around that they don't know.
Right now my neighborhood is having problems with people trying to get into my neighbors toolshed. My dogs alerted the neighbors to the problem.
People who know that I have these 2 dogs DON'T GO NEAR MY HOUSE!!!!!!!!! This is the way it is supposed to be!!!!!!!!!

He is doing what dogs are ment to do protect what is there's I have one to but people can not walk up to him at all unless i tell him its ok and I still have to watch him and if my kids are out side no one can come in the gate. but mine are also big dogs so when the bark is bad. The alfa dog is just does his job don't worry and on most of them you can not correct it.
