Any suggestions would be appreciated??

Have had two carpet store salespeople tell me the best thing for cleaning carpets is plain hot water. So you might just continue using your current solution. For the spots, try pre-treating them with "Shout!"" (or other laundry pre-wash spray) or use a scrub brush and your concentrated cleaning solution (or a solution of Biz and water.)

Congratulations to you on refusing to use toxic commercial cleaners around your pets. All I use is white vinegar and water in my carpet cleaner, and for tough spots, I'll saturate the stained area with a safe enzymatic cleaner like "Nature's Miracle" and let it sit overnight before cleaning. It takes out almost every stain. Others have used Nature's Miracle in the carpet cleaner, but I've never done this. Supposedly it also works well. I'd stop using the Dawn detergent-- it seems to attract dirt to the carpet quicker and sticks to the stained areas making them stain with dirt all over again.

Many dog people love this product for stains:

It's safe for almost any surface, and can even be used directly on the dog so it's safe and highly effective. I have heard nothing but rave reviews and will be purchasing some for our home and kennel area.

Here's how to use it on carpets: http://www.simpleclean.org/carpetcleaning.html

Plain hot water and a capfull of bleach seems to work the best for me in my steamer . I bought a steamer cleaner last year and I cannot tell you how much money that has saved me on carpet cleaning and the house smells wonderfull after you do it . good luck .
