I just adopted a Mini Pin from the local Humane Society. He seems to be housebroken as long as someone is in the house with him. He will come and whine when he needs to go out. When we are gone tho it is a different matter. He is between 3 and 4 years old. I would like to know if it is possible to crate train him at this age. I would also like to get him totally housebroken. I could deal with Paper Training him too. Anyone have a suggestion ? I have put him in a crate a couple times but he really goes bonkers. He hates it. He will not be left in the crate for more than a few hours at a time while I am at work. He will also not have to be crated everyday. No more than three days a week and for not more than 4 or 5 hours at a time. I hope this is not to long... If he can be trained any idea how long it might take? Thanks for any advice...

We took one of our dogs to the vet earlier and all was fine, except his neuro system, because he was shaking out of control. Our second dog (much bigger than the first) is slightly shaking (not bad compared to the first one).
Does anyone know what it could be?? All of the vital signs are fine, and his organs are fine, his bloodcount is normal... He is just shaking...

My dog began exhibiting strange behavior this evening. The best way to explain it is that she seems to be having a hard time swallowing. And not while eating...just when she's swallowing her saliva. Its looks sort of like how people swallow when they have a very sore throat...like an exaggerated swallow.

I checked her mouth and throat opening for any congestion, but couldn't find any. Does anybody know what this behavior suggests?? She is a 75lb German Shorthair.

Thanks to everyone for there input, talked to the vet a few minutes ago. My dog has been diagnosed with Pancreatitis, this would explain the blood in his vomit and the other symptoms. From what the vet tells me hell make full recovery..meds for 14 days and ill have to watch his diet from now on. Eating that chicken was probably what did it..alot of fat. Anyone else have any stories about Pancreatitis? Again thanks very much for everyones input!

I know greyhounds are bred for the racing track. But who breeds them and why can't regular people get puppies?

To take the cats on as carry-on, and the dog in luggage?
What are aproved carriers?
Should I not feed them a few hours before?
should I feed them on the plane?
To sedate or not to? (9hr flight)

This will be a summer time flight, non-stop (still 9hrs. and dording so 10), the dog (Jackie) weighs 17-18lb the cats around 15. how large of a crate should I get for Jackie he's oh say 16-18" tall. I'm not sure if getting him a big one is a good idea, pros: lots of room and I could put in a mock litterbox for him to relive himself, cons: he could be tossed side to side in it!!!(I think). Thank you All!!! and if you have travel tips I would love to hear them!!!

So my dog is 2 years old and she has white around her muzzle which makes her look older, I've grown tired of everyone thinking she is going on her last years so I just wanted to dye that part of her. I heard Kool Aid works but that doesn't come in black. Is men facial her dye safe? I wanted to do it myself also since its a small part.

i know it takes several generations to create a breed a dog... the type that can breed true. dogs are currently in the breeds they are because they were used for a specific function. in this day and age when those functions are (for the most part) obsolete. have humans created any new breeds for any functions today?

i.e. the terrier was initially bred for hunting and killing vermin. nowadays they aren't used as such (at least not that often).

The nearly 2 year old black and white great dane I have is... well, even the breeders in this area tend to gape at him. He's spectacular. And he's got a wonderful personality.

I'd love to show him. Nothing extremely high up (his tail was broken as a pup and it healed a bit crooked-I'm honestly not sure he can even be shown because of it) but just for a bit of fun. He'll be getting into agility soon-ish.

i know that there are "legitimate" bloodlines for dogs, the ones that need papers to show proof. but considering that there are only so many "families", has it affected the canine?

i know that if you breed certain animals too close to the bloodline, it may cause genetic problems, i also know that if there are too many similarities within a species, that it makes it more suceptable to the fact that one disease could wipe them out. so are the dog breeds in that situation now?

although i don't know the specifics, i've heard that certain dogs have very specific health problems (it's specific to their breed). is this going to get worse as the years go by? i mean, is this going to become a more common occurence where more and more of the dogs within a breed are more suceptable to a certain health problem? and is anything being done to try to remedy this?
