It is the the flat type of bone...not a leg bone.

Flat bones are normally the ribs and they are very brittle. If you have a dog that chews a lot you should go for a stronger beef bone. Go for a Crown Knucke (the hip bone) which is great for aggressive chewers. Also choose plain beef bones with marrow. This are the middle sections of the leg and are very durible as well. Going with smaller thin bones can be dangerous.

I've never had a dog chew off whole pieces of a real bone. Are you sure you didn't give him a rawhide bone by accident? The real bones are so hard that even the most avid chewer usually doesn't even make a dent in them. If you dog is chewing off whole chunks of real bone, you need to take it away from him, because those pieces could cause an intestinal obstruction, and it could do damage to his teeth. Try a Nylabone, or the edible version of Nylabones. My friend also swears by cow hooves (available at most pet stores).

I've seen plenty of bones and bone fragments removed surgically after they punctured an internal organ. My advice to to avoid giving your dog anything that is not 100% digestible and made specifically for a dog to eat.

I would recommend getting something that is edible so if its eaten its okay to be digested.

The dog's still gonna be happy, its still a bone. Unless its for you :]

I would watch him carefully and not leave it down when your not there as he could choke we have stopped giving our dogsthem as they have choked a few times just a thought.
