You're absolutely right, do not use Q-tips. Baby wipes can also irritate the ear if they are scented. You can use mineral oil on a cotton ball to gently clean the ears. The following website will provide alot of very good information on this topic along with suggestions for preventing dog ear infections, etc. Hope this helps.

Pet stores like pet supermarket or PetSmart sell ear drops for a great price! My dogs had ear problems too but the ear drops from the pet store helped alot. It comes in a easy drip tube and has way easy directions to apply. Don't risk putting something that might hurt your dogs ears, just be safe and buy from the pet store!

Was it purple?. I doubt it was purple, but we do have a home mix that is somewhat anti fungal and VERY HIGHLY STAINING that makes a good ear solution. It is called Blue Power Treatment. For those of you with cocker spaniels, or any other breed that tends to get infections, or particularly dirty I suggest using it out side before a bath etc. It will stain most everything it touches as in carpet clothing etc. Lets me find you a link with the formula, and some other advice with regard to it.

Alcohol and water is fine, just mix equal parts. If your dog is a drop ear breed (like a Lab, Cocker, or Hound) than you will want to mix three parts rubbing alcohol to one part water. If in a pinch you can also used strait rubbing alcohol. But if your dogs ears begin to look irritate you will need to take the dog to the vet.

Don't use alcohol, it is harsh and can cause a burinig sensation to sensitive ears, and is excessively drying which can cause discomfort.
Purchase any NON MEDICATED ear cleaner at the pet store for a few bucks or from a vet for $5-$15.
If you can't afford to buy a cleaner now, use warm water with a little vinegar and cotton balls.

The cleaning solution is called Opticlear and the medication is called Soloran.
Dogs with long floppy ears tend to build up heat which causes a wax build up.

I own a hound (german shorthair), and sometimes her ears get very dirty. I believe she even got ear mites once.
I began cleaning her ears regulary with one part vinegar, one part warm water, on a soaked cotton ball. The vinegar is not toxic, and is gentle, and seems to work great. Even cured the ear mites and related smell in one day.

Baby wipes and then a VERY light/thin layer of baby oil...but use a cotton ball or soft cloth to remove any excess oil.
