i know it takes several generations to create a breed a dog... the type that can breed true. dogs are currently in the breeds they are because they were used for a specific function. in this day and age when those functions are (for the most part) obsolete. have humans created any new breeds for any functions today?

i.e. the terrier was initially bred for hunting and killing vermin. nowadays they aren't used as such (at least not that often).

Well, this may not be what you are looking for but the Kintamani dog recently recieved recognition as a breed in April 2006. And there are talks of it soon to be joining the FCI.

trust me the AKC is not the end all be all of dog registries and is not the only one, actually I believe that the FCI is a much better one. Dogs can be a breed and not have to be registered with the AKC! And what makes a dog a breed is that it BREEDS TRUE to type, meaning that the mother and the father and the children and the grand children etc...all have the same characteristics such as heit weight coat type ear type tail length etc...

It depends what you consider "created". Dogs are being permitted into the AKC nearly every year. The Neopolitan Mastiff and the Black Russian Terrier are two 'new', or newly recognized. breeds out there.

There are also 'breeds' like the Klee Kai and Cane Corso that are in the process of being perfected and created. They are not recognized by the AKC, but they have some core members trying to get them perfected and recognized.

Puggles, Doodle dogs, and all those designer hybrids are not "new breeds". They have not been developed as a breed. They have been developed to fill a desire for people to have a fancy label and have a dog like Jessica, Mischa, Hilary, and all those other people. I seriously doubt that a Labradoodle or Puggle will EVER be seriously considered by the AKC. They are essentially just to make unscrupulous breeders money.

The puggle and and the labradoodle were both invented in the past year or two. The labradoodle is a cross between a labrador and a poodle which is supposed to be much more hyperallegenic since the poodle doesn't have as much dander. The puggle, named the hot new breed by Money magazine, is a cross between a pug and a beagle. Supposedly all the cuddlieness of the pug with out the breathing issues and the playfulness of a beagle with out all the barking.

I know of no breed that is or has been attempted for any purpose other than as companion dogs.

Look around, Labs, Pugs, Schnauzers, Golden Retrievers, and on and on and on have been cross bred with POODLES. Why? Very simple, poodles are hands above all other breeds in the smarts department.

Strange is it not that today you almost can't find a real for life Standard Poodle!

Go Figure!

No. the rules for breeds were determined by the AKC back in the early 1900's and it takes a LOT to be admitted as a new breed. Thats not to say that popular cross-breeding isnt happening now.
Look at some of the new cross-breeds like pom-chis, labradoodles, and puggles. these will probly in time become new breeds.

This isn't a direct answer to your question, it's more directed at one of the other commenters. The new "breeds" of dogs like Labradoodles and Puggles are NOT a new breed, they are a mutt. They will not become their own breed.

It amazes me when people pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for a dog just because it is a mutt that they haven't seen before.

ya know other then to sell mutts at breeder prices no. c0ck-poo, labadoodle.. mutts, puggle mutt. it is hard believe what ppl will buy in to as good breeding...it takes A LOT for the akc to take in any new found breeds...there has to be good foundation stock in this country and most take years decades even the German Spitz it one they have been trying to get in for some time but the breeding for it is poor in this country...the united kingdom excepts more breeds then the AKC does and i believe the German Spitz is one of them.

I know that my friend has begun breeding a certain type of dog. she mixed her three favorite hunting dogs, along with a little bit of wolf blood, and she made up some name for it. there are a lot of people who create breeds, but they technicallyarent breeds until the AKC admitts them, but they can be reffered to as breeds.
