I read this today in the 'Lake County News-Herald',(Ohio):

'The German Shepherd now known as Hero recently saved the life of a Georgia woman whose car had
careened down an embankment.
Hero had wondered off from his owners, who have signed him over to the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society because he kept doing exactly that, when he happened upon a 36 year old woman, bruised and battered on her vehicle's trunk after losing control on a curve.
He pulled her by her shirt collar about 50 yards through briars to the highway and let her lean against him so she could signal a passing motorist Jan. 26.
"That dog is always going to have a place in my heart.",The woman said.

I started my 4 m/o German shepherd puppy at puppy kindergarden today, and I had no control over him. He was on the edge of his leash pulling, whining and barking at every dog he saw at PetSmart. He pays no attention to my commands and can't even be distracted by treats. He's gentle with other dogs, he just doesn't stop freaking out until he's in their faces. The trainer said that this is pretty normal for shepherds and labs, but seemed annoyed by my loud-mouthed dog. She asked me to bring something to class next time to distract him while she's talking (even though she watched me try to distract him with treats and toys today with no success), but I don't know what to do. None of the other puppies were like this, will he grow out of it or is there something I can do to stop him? He's getting neutered Tuesday because he has some dominance/aggression issues. The vet wanted to do it early because she thinks it will help. Will it help tone down his excitment too?

I have noticed that some people say things like "People who worry about how dogs are treated in a world with starving human children should be fed to the dogs" or "Why worry about dogs which are just an animal when there are children suffering in the world?

Why does it have to be either or, instead of both AND?
Why are some people so narrowminded that they cant have compassion for all life? Shouldnt we as the supposedly most intelligent species on the planet and supposedly the only ones with emotion have it in us to love all life and protect all life from suffering?
Isnt it rather selfish and egotistical to assume that human life is the only life worth protecting and having compassion for?

The domestic dog must have evolved from several different wild canines such as jackals, coyotes, and wolves, but it is stated that all breeds of dogs descended from one species which is the grey wolf's DNA which has spawned so many canine variety....so in may cases that we have heard in the news lately about dogs reverting back to their wild side, and for no apparent reason attack people in the most vicious way.....are some breeds then, more less aggressive then others if so which breed of dog would you consider more or less aggressive? and is it soley down to the owner of the dog to be responsible?

We got our pup Nov 2005 at 8 wks. After about 8 weeks she started with a sore ear, went to the vet. Tests & treatment was given problem sorted. About 6 weeks later it was back. Back to the vet, same tests & treatment, again sorted. About 6 weeks later, same again. The vet gave her same tests & treatment but said it seems more likely to be an allergy & if it happens again they will do further tests. By now it was the beg of May. Summer came & she didn't have any more problems & I forgot about it. Then in October she began with her ear problem again, but also chewing her feet & scratching & making her skin soar. Back to the vets. She was treated but they also gave her a course of tablets for allergies. Sorted! About 8 weeks later same again, now she is on allergy tablets permanently. Vet says could be just about anything. The only thing I can think of is we have a rabbit & g.pig that we bring inside in the winter & goes out in the summer. Could she be allergic to the hay, straw etc. etc?

I am moving into an apartment and originally was going to get a small dog but I have always wanted a rotty. Would it been bad on the part of an owner to own a rotty sized dog in an apartment.

My dog has taken house trained very well and she is about six months now and up until now only had about two mistakes (which were mainly because we couldn't read her whining signs). Although this week alone she has had already like 4-5 accidents in the house...and i'm starting to worry. As far as I've seen her urine has been normal color...or yellow..but no stones/crystals/blood in it. She got spayed two weeks ago, so it shouldn't be alpha behavior. And I doubt she's trying to get attention because usually she's caught doing it when she just looked away for a minute or two...anybody know why she suddenly started urinating in the house or possible reasons? THank YOu.

Which breed of dog would be compatiable with living in an apartment, with young children and small animals. I've been researching it and can't decided whilch one fits the description. My chihuahuah is very grouchy and doesn't get along with anything so I want something that isn't big enough to eat him.

On wensday I went ouside to get the mail, and run my Doberman. And on my way there ( i have 5acres, it takes 2 to get to the front gate) I saw a dog in trying to get in my chained linked fence. So my Doberman ran as fast as he could, bared his teeth and hair, and wouldnt let me near the gate. So I made my doberman Get away from the gate, and I went up the the dog and it was a Pure bred pitt. he jumped up on the gate so i petted him and he was really sweet. So i let him in and automatically my doberman saw that it was okay, but towered over him to let him know he was here first. and I checked him for and I.D or tattoo but he had neither. And i asked everyone on my street if they were missing a dog, nobody did. So I made the mistake of feeding the dog becuase he was REALLY thin, and now he wont leave. I tried to push him out of the gate, and when i did, He got right back in an hour later. But i am 99.9% sure that this dog does not have a microchip.Becuase where i live, isnt really a good area, and litteraly every person on my block or within a 5 mile radius, Have unhealthy/dirty/skinny/unident... for Dog. we have animal controll vans on my street everyday, to try to save some dogs. some even stop me to thank me for having my Dobermans well cared for, and healthy. But I dont want to keep the dog if it has an owner who loves it, im looking up info now, and after im dont typing this im going to call our humane society, put up a found dog add, put poster up in our local grocery store and the works becuase if this dog does have an owner, it should go back, right? Even though it came to me unhealthy? becuase my dog and him get along REALLY GOOD, the play out in my yard for hours. and im afraid that the owner wont care for it, am i doing the right thing?
