It may be related to your seacrh parameters. If you're being really picky, there might not be any dogs matching your selections nearby. If you're in a sparesely populated area, there may be very few shelters near you. Or, it could be that none of the nearby shelters are registered.
Usually if you put in just 'dogs' and your ZIP code it should pull up all shelters with dogs in your area, in order from closest to farther away.

It may be a good ideal to check with your local animal shelter or humane society I work at a animal shelter and I know that there are a lot of animals in shelters needing to find homes our shelter has a web sight BUT once on the sight they get adopted fairly quickly its hard to keep petfinders current you can view the animals first hand if you go to the shelter in person, GOD LUCK ON FINDING A PET PLEASE CONSIDER ADOPTION AS ITWILL SAVE A HOMELESS ANIMAL!!!!!!!!!!!

Whereabouts in the world are you?
If you're in the UK, this might be a more useful site to you:

In the meantime - keep trying and good luck rescuing a dog. It really can be very rewarding.

Call your local ASPCA chapter and ask what shelters are in your area. You could even call a vet and ask what info they have... they are usually helpful in assisting to place homeless animals. Also check yor local Petco or Petsmart, they often have adoption days....
You are sweet to adopt a pet that needs you. Good luck.

Where are you located? Are you in the US or Canada? Not all shelters/rescue groups are listed on Petfinder.com
If your not, that maybe why.
You can try: http://www.mypetnanny.info/pd/index.htm and see if that helps you, also. Find your state and contact local animal shelters and rescue groups. Somebody will be able to help you!!
