i've been temorarily taking care of this dog from my local animal shelter and i think he might have tapeworms, can I get it from him, how, and how long does it take for symptoms to show?

Yes, you can get them.
but you have to "swallow an infected flea"
So it is kind of hard to get them.
I don't know how long it takes for symptoms to show, because sometimes they don't show up.

Well here's the issue I have with people that foster. Please don't misunderstand my respect for people who foster. However once a dog goes into a foster, its not always easy to get that dog out of foster for adoption. For a foster its like getting the breed you like with vet bills paid. So all you have to do is feed them and provide what an adoptive person would supply only the vet bills are paid. How handy is that? So does this mean that if you decide to be a foster, you can get the breed you like delivered with vet bills paid? Don't think its very fair to be honest. I've played hell just trying to get a foster to return my calls or emails. They claim the rescue organization is in charge of a dogs adoption, not necessarily. I think some of them are buddies and share a breed. Then turn lose of the old or handicapped ones they don't want. Just my opinion

No, not unless you eat him uncooked. You can only get tapeworm by ingesting uncooked meat which is why it is so common in dogs and cats that tend to hunt or eat wild raw meat. Dogs with tape worm usually don't thrive, poor coat, always hungry, weight loss, the best thing to do is to contact the shelter and ask for the all around dewormer Lopatol.

NO, you can NOT get tapeworms from a dog. Tapeworms are only transeferable through fleas or eating rodents.

Tape worm is from ingesting fleas... so I doubt you will get it..
You wil see what looks like rice in his poop.. Call your vet.. its an easy fix.. he will get a pill for now and a second in two weeks...

And get him on flea control to avoid this happening again..

Good luck.. Thanks for fostering!!

Tell the shelter ASAP and they should help treat him.
