I am moving into an apartment and originally was going to get a small dog but I have always wanted a rotty. Would it been bad on the part of an owner to own a rotty sized dog in an apartment.

yes, unless you have the time to take him/her for walks and runs several times a day. They need their exercise and they need to be socialized with people, children and other dogs.

Many apartments don't allow big dogs. You better check with them or if you adopt a rottie he/she will be homeless because of your choice.

If you don't have the time to take him/her out for daily walks 2-3 times a day, and don't socialize this dog then do not get a rottwieler.

Go here and find a Rotwieler rescue (or other) group for more information. http://www.mypetnanny.info/pd/index.htm

Large dogs need a large space. They need to be able to exercise to stay healthy, let off steam, and relieve boredom. Rottys aren't a passive breed, and weren't bred to be indoor dogs. Bored dogs look for things to do and can cause damage in apartments. They can also become needlessly aggressive. Do yourself a favor, if you must have a dog in an apartment, make it a smaller dog that does well in that type of environment. A vet or the Humane Society can give you tips on which breeds do well in apartments.

It all depends. Are you prepared to take your Rottie on long RUNS everyday for the rest of it's life. A large dog that does not get enough exercise can develop some very destructive and costly habits.

I would advise against it, but who knows, maybe you are a runner and can provide the outlet for exercise a dog that size will need.

It depends a lot on the size of the apartment. If the apartment is very small, you should just adopt a small breed dog or a cat. If the apartment is pretty big, it would probably be ok. Just make sure you take your dog out for walks or to play outside frequently.

No, not mean if you can get the dog out for 30min to 1 hour of exercise a day. I live in a small house with a little brown mutt, and a lab/rottie mix, and the lab/rottie is definatly more chilled out than the mutt. I exercise her for her health, but she is content to lay around all day.

Since you don't have the dog already, it is better to get a smaller dog. A rottweiler needs a lot of time running around etc. I had rescued a dog of this size - maybe smaller, and he was miserable in the apartment, he now lives in a garden and he is much happier, although I am miserable without him!
He doesn't just needs walks, he needs at least an hour of being free in a park or sth.

It's not mean if you make time for him. Like everyone else says, do make time to walk him or even take him to the dog park each day. It's best to do this at least once a day, and if you only exercise him once, please make sure it's in the morning, otherwise your dog won't be happy when you're gone all day at work. Also, Remember dogs do need to be taken outside every few hours, and with an apartment it can be a pain in the butt. Good luck:)

I would not say it is wrong, but you must make sure that you walk the dog, and get it plenty of exercise. I don't know if you are going to have a yard or not, but the dog definitely needs to be walked at least 2-3 times a day.. If you have not already got the dog, then I would definitely check into a smaller dog!!!

If you are going to be willing to exercise that dog at least 30 minutes every day. Check with your city. More and more cities are no longer allowing Rotts or Pit Bulls within the city limits. Also, check to make sure the apartment will allow a large dog. You don't want to get evicted as soon as you move in.

Yes unless you walk him exercise him at least 2 hours a day. They were bred as cattle guard dogs which is being outside all day being active with the cattle. A small apt is torture for a dog bred to work in the wide open range. Dont do it. Most apt owners wil NOT take qa rott becausde they are considered one of the dangerous dog breeds. If you are able to find an apt it will be a horrible flea bag type place. Youll never be able to be a homeowner with a rott because they dont insure houses with dangerous dogs. Small dog is best but please walk him a mile or 2 a day.
