I suspected that it might be a food allergy.

sounds like an alergy to me, my dog did that once. I took him to the vet, it wasn't real expensive to get it taken care of either. His was an alergy to grass and he got over it after a while.

That is what it sounds like but it may not be just a food allergy. My Lab has severe allergy problems but they environmental and he gets the red itdhy watery eyes. My Pit Bull has food allergies he breaks out in bumps if he eats any beef,

I'd say it's an allergy of some sort. Could also be caused by using a plastic food bowl. Many dogs get redness and pimply spots from that ... go with metal or ceramic food/water dishes. Plastic can harbor bacteria.

It could be an allergy-either environmental or food-or it could be the dog was sprayed with an irritant.

If it is a puppy, it may be mange. It could also be an allergy.
