Both are great pets. Terriers are stubborn and like to do things their own way, but are really wonderful. I happen to think you can't go wrong with a mini schnauzer. I have a girl and she is the sweetest, most loving dog I've ever seen. They also don't shed and are considered to be hypoallergenic.

Common misconception is that Schnauzers (and most terriers) don't shed. ALL dogs shed, it's just that most of these supposed "non-shedder"s don't drop as much coat all over your floor. Dogs like that (and Poodles, Bichons, Westies, etc) tend to require more grooming because their dead undercoat gets trapped at the skin level and tangles more within itself and with the protective guard hairs.
There's also no such thing as a hypo-allergenic dog. Most people with dog allergies are allergic to the dander and/or the saliva. All dogs have skin and they all have spit, so unless you're one of the very rare few people that are actually allergic to dog hair, you're out of luck. And even then, all dogs have SOME hair (even a Chinese Crested has some).

Scotties are adorable, and are one of my favorite of the terrier group. However, they do have a reputation as not being so great with other dogs, so be careful with introducing one into your home. Scotties tend to be more prone to joint problems, but Mini Schnauzers tend to have more skin problems (most of which, however, can be avoided with good grooming techniques, such as hand-stripping and carding the coat ... this is true for ALL terrier breeds).

If it were my call, I'd go with the Mini Schnauzer. Just my humble opinion, though.

You need to get your miniature schnauzer shaved by a groomer. Also brush him. There are sections of his coat that will be long and you have to brush him every day. I had a miniature schnauzer and she loved getting brushed. I also learned how to groom her myself and the cost for the shears is a very good investment. Do not by any means get the dog stripped. The groomer will always shave the stomach area clean so that you can see the skin and will leave some hair on his little penis.
