we just got a girl cocker spaniel who is white and brown. I wanted to give her an unusal name but not too hard to pronounce. I thought a American Indian name would be great. I want to know the meaning of the name as well and how to say it. Any ideas? She loves the water so something with that would be great, or mountains, or snow...

my chihuahua delivered puppies this weekend. she had 4..one didnt make it. Here it is now monday and seems to be having trouble. I thought she had diarreha and since shes white it was leaving a mess. i got a towel and tried to help her clean up. the more i wiped..the more this blackish stuff came out in a string..she began to pull and chew as well..and she keeps straining as if she needs to use the bathroom leaving puddles of this stuff around. Is there anything i can do to help her get this out?

I have an Olde English Bulldogge. She is intact as of now, and I have to assume she's going into "split heat". She went into heat the middle/end of November, and then on the 18th of December she started bleeding again. She's been bleeding 3 weeks now. I called the vet, who said to just watch her for another week or 2.

Maybe it's me, but isn't 3+ weeks of bleeding excessive for an OEB? I figured 3 weeks being the maximum for bleeding. Other than the bleeding this time, she doesn't display any vulvar swelling, or urinating in many different spots of the yard.

For anyone who wants to tell me to "get her fixed", or "don't have an intact dog if you don't know what you're doing", please don't even comment. We don't intend to breed this dog until we have finished our studies. Breeders aren't born, they're made, which is why we'll wait until her third heat to breed. I don't plan to breed until I'm fully educated.

Thanks!

I have a 1 year old schnauzer, who is trained in just about every aspect except whining. As I speak he is outside whining and it sounds like digging a hole through my door. I have been sitting here for at least an hour waiting for a pause in his fit so I can let him in, but it's to no avail. I generally leave him and our other dog out long enough to do ALL of their business, which means about 5-10 minutes, and after about 1-2, he's out there whining and scratching at the door violently. He and the other dog spend the night in our utility room, and he whines from the minute he's put in there for at least an hour, and then in the morning when he wakes up till we let them out. He also whines and howls when we leave. I think it sounds like separation anxiety, but I've tried all the usual things to fix it. What else can I do?

We brought home a 3 month old husky/shepherd mix on Saturday. The dog is very friendly; however, when we put him outside, he's fine for a while then starts this blood-curdling howling/whining that drives the neighbors nuts. I put a bark collar on him (the type that sprays a lemon scent at his snout when he barks), but I don't think that the whining/howling is enough to trigger it.

Will the dog eventually stop doing this? Is this normal? I know you're not supposed to respond to the howling, because the dog will learn that he can get attention that way. But at the same time, I cannot let him continue to make all that noise outside, so I end up bringing him back inside.

HELP!!!

My husband and I are attending a dog show, and have never been to one. We are buying a dog there, and the breeder wanted to know if we have children. I told them we have one daughter. We don't have a sitter because it is last minute sitaution. Are children allowed at dogs shows? how long do dog shows last?

there are numerous sites including www.pitbullregistry.com that tell the history of the breed and may clear up some scare mongering about this loyal,human-friendly breed. The dogs behaviour is TOTALLY down to the owner, yes it is some madmen who mix the breed with proven agrresive dogs to create a fighting dog but don't judge the entire breed by the actions of yobs that try to make themselves look hard, these dogs by nature are deeply loving ,very obidient, family orientated dogs. I have had one that I brought up along side my children since infancy with all the tail pulling etc and she had NEVER agve me cause for concern, my jack russel was far more aggressive in fact. ALL dogs have the capacity to attack, so do your research first before buying a dog and be sure of its background. Please take the time to understand this most misunderstood breed, you might surprise yourself.

My family is contemplating getting a Newfoundland pup. We have owned large breed dogs in the past but this would be our first registered pet. We are planning to go and meet with the breeder and see the mother and pups. They wont be ready to go till late February. Any advice?
