I assume you mean "cropping" when the dog's ears are set in a type of soft splint so their ears will remain permanently up. That would depend on the vet. Not knowing what breed of dog you own, I couldn't really tell you whether or not your dog needs it because some breeds don't require it because the ears become stable as the dog matures (usually just before their first birthday). The ones that do are usually done to meet show standards, but some owners prefer to leave the ears natural.

If you are referring to "cropping" I'm sure it all depends where you live. If you're in the USA the cost should be on a average of $300-$600. I have Dobermans and have for many years. All were cropped but one and all the ones that were done turned out really nice. The one I didn't do was only because I wanted one with natural ears. Be sure whoever you get has a lot of experience. Good luck.

The procedure is called otoplasty! I'm 22 right now but I had it done at the age of 18! My ears stuck out so bad that I never wore my hair up etc. I had it done for around $3,000 and i LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! I wear my hair up now all the time and the recovery time wasn't too bad at all...It wasn't painful because they do it at a hospital and it's a one day surgery so you can leave about an hour after it's done. Recovery was around a week or less...i would HIGHLY recommend it! it changed my life!

That could give you an idea...

Give it plenty of thought before you do it. I had a doberman and made the mistake of cropping her ears. It was HORRIBLE. They basically trace a pattern on the ear, then cut off what they don't want and sew all around the edges. I didn't realize how awful it would be. If I could do it over again, I would keep those cute floppy ears.

Well, that depends on how much you would like to spend on animal abuse! Ear cropping is one, if not the, bloodiest surgeries we perform on animals. Luckily my hospital doesn't do them. Not only do they have to go thru the painful surgery, then they have to have their ears taped up for a while, very incomfortable, many times having to wear an e-collar to keep them from rubbing them. It's just not worth it and isn't going to make your dog look better or meaner.

DON'T DO IT. How would you like your ears done like that? Are you really that cruel? Bad dog owner. Do your own ears first.
