We brought home a 3 month old husky/shepherd mix on Saturday. The dog is very friendly; however, when we put him outside, he's fine for a while then starts this blood-curdling howling/whining that drives the neighbors nuts. I put a bark collar on him (the type that sprays a lemon scent at his snout when he barks), but I don't think that the whining/howling is enough to trigger it.

Will the dog eventually stop doing this? Is this normal? I know you're not supposed to respond to the howling, because the dog will learn that he can get attention that way. But at the same time, I cannot let him continue to make all that noise outside, so I end up bringing him back inside.

HELP!!!

He sleeps in the house. He whines for awhile, then stops. I'm hoping that he will eventually quit whining outside as well.

We got the "spray-type" bark collar because we already have a "shock" collar for the invisible fence, and we don't want the dog to be confused. I just called my wife, and she told me that his howling has stopped - for the moment. I hope it stays that way.

He's a friendly puppy who's lonely. Does he have to sleep outside? Why not get him his own dog bed and put it in a room somewhere inside your home where he can feel like part of the family.

This many sound silly, but there are dogs afraid of the dark, they hear a sound or see a animal they will bark like crazy, Their trying to scare whatever it is off, you might have to bring the dog inside because if it keeps disturbing the neighbor they could call the police and you will get a disturbing the peace ticket, I once knew a dog that wouldn't quit barking ( my neighbor's dog ) I went out one night to try and find what he was barking at, I found it, one of those plastic grocery bags was caught way up in a tree and it fluttered and moved in the wind.

They do have REAL bark collars that will correct a dog for barking or yelping or howling. It's called an electric collar. Get one and put it on the dog. The tritronics model has several different settings that you can put it on, depending on your dog, and they work great. I have had sveral dogs that needed it and I have used it with great success.

the husky part of your pup is probably whats causing the "problem" Both breeds in your pup are working breeds so its possible that the pup could be bored..so if it has to stay out..put some toys and such and keep it occupied..Huskies on the other hand work in packs..so its possible that the pup is lonely..if you cant get another pup to keep it company outside I would bring it in and keep it in your pack as part of the family..also before you put the pup outside try a nice long walk appropriate for the pups age.

Go with the shock collar or even use the pennies in a can trick. But I have to say, you have a husky, so good luck!
