You can ask your veterinarian to prescribe a sedative to help your dog relax when fireworks are being shot off.

Difficult one as the dogs and your own personality can complicate this one. The noise of fireworks generally causes the fear but sometimes all the flashing lights upsets animals as well.
You could try the treatment for dogs that are afraid of electrical storms- this (in brief) involves playing a recording of a storm to them at low volume and distracting/rewarding them then over time increasing the volume until they pay no attention to it even when its really loud. Frankly though I think the chances for fireworks are much less- as two of my hunting dogs that were used to shotguns and rifles, nonetheless throughout their lives had a terrible fear of the sound of fireworks not matter what I tried. The only thing in the end was to get sedation from the vet and give it to them when there were fireworks on.

You should do nothing. Dogs have extremely sensitive ears and are afraid of loud, sharp noises. Ever think of the reasons why so many pets are lost on Independence Day? This is your answer. The only thing you can do is request to whoever is blowing off the fireworks to blast them somewhere else as to not disturb neighbors or their pets. And if they don't, file a complaint. I hope this fireworks problem can be resolved, otherwise, your dog has to stay in a very quiet part of the house/yard.

I was out a week after bonefire night with my eight month Akita. He weighs about 100lbs at moment. He went crazy - Pulling me everyway but the way I wanted to go. He has bolted on me before and I know from experience that he just keeps running.
It was very scary and He was out of control.
Sorry, but There is nothing you can do other than put your dog into a small room and put on music as loud as your neighbours will allow. If the fireworks are going of at the back of your house move the dog to the front and vice versa.
All the best.

You can't just make a dog, not be afraid of Fireworks, or Thunder, or any type of a loud noise. They have very sensitive ears, and loud noises hurt their ears. There is one thing that you can do though, and that's to take her to your vet or call your vet, and they have medicines{Tranquilizers} that they give to dogs that do have this fear of Loud noises. You can give these meds to the dogs for fireworks, thunder, or any other situation, they get scared of, but the Vet is the only one who can help you and your dog.

I have a set procedure for this. (Bad weather can cause the same reaction)
I take my young dogs to a fireworks display staying about a 1/4 -1/2 mile away. Sit right down on the ground with the dog and make a huge deal out of every rocket they set off with lots of oohs and aahs. The young dogs will very quickly make the connection between fun and fireworks, with older dogs it will require a lot of patients and effort to desensitize them.

That sucks! I have cats and they are terrified when they go off, usually during New Years and 4th of July, although I have been noticing people are now shooting the damn things off at Christmas, birthdays, or it seems like any time of the year. I can't stand it! LOL!! Check your ordinances, you may be in luck if they have a holiday only policy, which still leaves you with what to do when they go off. Do you have an enclosed room where they can go into and feel safer? I know some of the fireworks sound like a gun going off... I had my neighbors shooting some off last night- and it's a week past New Years!!!! that soounded like a gun and then rice hitting a window. I was just getting to sleep, too! I always sit with my pets and try to keep them calm when it happens. I am always around on NY and 4th of July , too- sometimes they shoot them at my pets! (I bring them inside now.)Good luck!

You can ask you vet to give you a light sedative. Also, close all doors and windows and turn up the TV or stereo to muffle the sound of the fireworks.

Your dog's hearing is much more sensitive than a human being's. He is afraid and probably howls because it hurts his ears. There isn't much you can do unless you put cotton in his ears, but I wouldn't do that because some of it may get stuck in its ear canals. Maybe some earplugs that are soft. Ask your vet for advice.
