there are numerous sites including www.pitbullregistry.com that tell the history of the breed and may clear up some scare mongering about this loyal,human-friendly breed. The dogs behaviour is TOTALLY down to the owner, yes it is some madmen who mix the breed with proven agrresive dogs to create a fighting dog but don't judge the entire breed by the actions of yobs that try to make themselves look hard, these dogs by nature are deeply loving ,very obidient, family orientated dogs. I have had one that I brought up along side my children since infancy with all the tail pulling etc and she had NEVER agve me cause for concern, my jack russel was far more aggressive in fact. ALL dogs have the capacity to attack, so do your research first before buying a dog and be sure of its background. Please take the time to understand this most misunderstood breed, you might surprise yourself.

Genetics and environment people, that is what it's all about. Pit's have allot of "heart" yes, when they do get into it, they will finish it, yes, and people have bred the living crap out of them and we end up with the waco dogs that we see today. And no, it's not all depending on how the owner will treat the dog. If a dog has a genetic problem such as weak nerves, he is a fear biter or whatever, there is nothing you can do about it. It is also people depended, like the member here who said they all need a belly rub and a cookie, THAT IS THE BIGGEST REASON why we have problems with all our dogs. They need obedience and a firm hand, they need discipline, and corrections. And in my 27 years of training dogs I have never heard of any dog going for the plastic gun. Whatever. Everything starts with the proper selection of a dog and goes from there. If you have the right dog and you raise it like a DOG, you will have fewer problems later on. That is why some dogs cost thousands of dollars. PROPER SELECTION AND BREEDING plus PROPER RAISING=good dog, pit or not. And of course we have to take into account OUR stupidity with doing things like leaving children alone with ANY DOG. We, as humans will never learn. It is mostly our actions that cause US the problems that we complain about.

I have owned and raised pit bulls for the past 11 years. I once owned and raised German Shepard. I would much rather be with my pits. I will never go back to another breed. It's all in how you raise them. I have raised 3 children to the best of my abilities. However, my 2 boy's can become quite wild at times, and it's nothing I showed them believe me! Pits are the most lovable and by far the most loyal canines I have witnessed. If you are responsible and aware of the fact that it is a dog, as any,you must be aware of children,no matter what the breed. No children should be in any dogs face. That's the responsibility of the owner and parents of little ones. Don't knock a pit until you try them. I love my dogs to death. My whole family owns them and they feel the same.

Bronte61, I totally agree with you. I have 4 Staffordshire Bull Terriers, all well bred & KC reg.
I think you are banging your head against a brick wall trying to tell people the good side of the Pitt Bull because of media hysteria.
It's not the breed thats bad it's the tossers that own them. Junkies & neds don't want to walk down the street with a little fluffy dog because it won't make them look hard.
There are also so many bad breeders out there it leads to badly bred dogs, with dodgy temperments and bad health. If puppy buyers went to reputable breeders there wouldn't be such a big problem, that goes for all breeds.
If Pitt Bulls were recognised by the UK KC I would certainly have 1 as a family pet/show dog.!!!

You know everytime I hear or read arguments about this breed its always the same thing i hear from the other side "The breed is bred to be agressive." I have to say NO! Only a few dogs of the breed are bred to be agressive. They are by far the best dogs you could ever ask for, if you show them love, trust and shower them with huggs and make them feel like a puppy again, they will love you back and shower you with big sloppy kisses. The pitbulls that I have been around they would NEVER hurt a fly...hell one time a bird snuck into the house and the bird was sitting on his head and he didn't even growl at it or bother with it.

I honestly have to say that in my opinion people who are generaly against them (not everyone just the few that I had talked to them about this) only were against them because of what they heard and saw in the media. Hell some police stations actually use pitbulls as police dogs.

Another thing from my experience is that my ex bestfriends pitbull is so conected with her that if she is out walking him and she stops to talk to someone and if he sences that she is getting nervous, scared or even mad with the person he will stand in between her and the person. My whole time being friends with her and practically living at her house I have never seen or heard of him biting anyone or anything let alone barking or growling. They had trained him to only seriously protect the family is if they were threatened with a gun and even the he didnt go after the person he went after the plastic gun to pretect his family. Well if I continue I'd just be repeating myself as always with this topic. Yes I definitly agree with you if they had real experience and did some research they would sure as hell be suprised.

I agree with you. Think about this, If one dog (lets say a German Shepherd) attacked a person does that mean ALL German Shepherds are mean? No, right? But people shouldn't say ONLY Pit bulls are vicious. They are some other dogs that are not pit bulls are vicious. But you have to be careful of ALL dog breeds. Any dog can be mean... And I don't agree with all the tests they make for pit bulls and everything. But you can't just say oh the pit bulls are mean or nice. They are all different. But you still have to be careful, because pit bulls can lock its jaw, even if they wanted to let go they can't. But I dont believe pit bulls are born mean. Its the owner. Your dog is your dog. You train them how you want it to be, good or bad. .. Hope This Helps.

Oh please I am so tired of people singing the praises of pitbulls!!! these dogs were bred for fighting and that is all they are good for . these dogs are not bred to be family pets . How many more people have to die because of these morons who think pits are so great . Guranteed if their child had their face ripped off right before their eyes they would not be so quick to defend these dogs. they are animals and they have animal instincts there is no denying that . yes all dogs bite that is true but not all dogs kill !!!! not all dogs are capable of dismembering a human such as these dogs are . thank god from what I see on this column there are others that feel the way I do . I simply do not want them or need them in my neighborhood . good luck I hope that dog never turns on your kids or your attitude might be different .

i have a 12 year old staffie and he is the most gentle dog you could met, he is fab with my kids and in fact loves being with kids rather than adults, this is to show how soft he is we use to have a rabbit and in the winter months the rabbit use to sleep wit our dog and they both cuddled each other, and he eve nwashed it. when the rabbit died he was devasted and moped about for weeks. Sometimes it's the owners that are a fault. I would not own a dangerous dog and if my dog did have a history i am sorry but i would put him down.

These dogs are bred to fight over dogs (at this time) and are trained to kill. They have a mentallity of not letting another dog submit, they want to end the fight by killing the other dog. This is why this breed is dangerous.
They are a very loyal and loving breed to there family, no one questions this - However, they are very dog aggressive and owners need to be responsible with this breed of dog, ensuring they socialise it well etc.

I absolutely love pitt bulls, and I'm not a drug dealer lol... Every one that I have met, is a sweety. They are SO loving. It has to do with the owner. The owner takes advantage of teh dogs natural strength . Ive even seen golden retreivers beign crazy dogs. It's always the owners fault. No dog is programmed to kill or BITE when they're born , unless taught. I love all dogs and I have never met ONE of any breed even a rottie, who is crazy or mean.

then you must be the first on the planet. because as someone who's owned more than one. they sure aren't friendly dogs. and i seriously doubt you let your kids pull on its tail or even play with the dog alone.

they can be a nice breed-and i agree the level of aggression is dependent on the why the dog is treated (if you teach the dog to play rough and go nuts with his toys..like so many do thinking its cute..you are bound to get a tough and mean dog. thinking any limb is his toy)

but bottom line those dogs aren't for families. they are dangerous-and they will bite just about anything.
