my chihuahua delivered puppies this weekend. she had 4..one didnt make it. Here it is now monday and seems to be having trouble. I thought she had diarreha and since shes white it was leaving a mess. i got a towel and tried to help her clean up. the more i wiped..the more this blackish stuff came out in a string..she began to pull and chew as well..and she keeps straining as if she needs to use the bathroom leaving puddles of this stuff around. Is there anything i can do to help her get this out?

Torbay is absolutely correct. There is nothing you can do, unless you happen to have oxytocin on hand and know when/how to use it.

Take your dog to the vet.

Does the blackish stuff have a foul smell? If it does, it might be more than just "afterbirth" (another pup may have died inside of her).

We suggest taking the dog to the vet. The vet can test the discharge to find out if it is just afterbirth, and may be able to assist the dog by giving it a shot that will force the uterus to contract and push out the remaining mess.

Chihuahua's are very fragile dogs. That afterbirth needs to come out right away, because if it doesn't, and I really hate to say this, she will probably develop a serious infection, and she can die. The veterinarian is the only one who can help her do this. Please take her and the puppies, {the puppies need to be kept very warm and out of drafty areas}, to a vet immediately, before it's too late, and you lose Mom and Puppies. Good Luck!

GO TO THE VET. She may need a oxytocin injection to help expell the afterbirth. If it says in, she can have a whopping infection and DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You ned to call and go TODAY!!!

And if you breed again....it is common practice to COUNT all the placentas so you KNOW if there is one retained.

Hopefully she does not have a retained pup!!!

Just be there with her. It will come out. She should have passed this before now though. That is why it is black (old blood) and has such an odor. You could always check with her Vet to be sure that their isn't still a puppy in there. ore than likely it is the after birth. But check wit the Vet to be sure.

Take her to the vet and they will give her a shot to expel everything in her uterus. Sounds like she has retained a placenta. If she doesn't pass it, she could get a very serious infection that couls affect her health and that of her puppies. Please take her in very soon!

She probably still has a baby in there! The black means it's dead, so yes, she needs to be seen by a vet.
