I have a 1 year old schnauzer, who is trained in just about every aspect except whining. As I speak he is outside whining and it sounds like digging a hole through my door. I have been sitting here for at least an hour waiting for a pause in his fit so I can let him in, but it's to no avail. I generally leave him and our other dog out long enough to do ALL of their business, which means about 5-10 minutes, and after about 1-2, he's out there whining and scratching at the door violently. He and the other dog spend the night in our utility room, and he whines from the minute he's put in there for at least an hour, and then in the morning when he wakes up till we let them out. He also whines and howls when we leave. I think it sounds like separation anxiety, but I've tried all the usual things to fix it. What else can I do?

I don't know how long you have had this puppy or what you have done to try and stop the whining, but usually when they are young puppies is the time to break them of their bad or unacceptable behavior.the fact that he is with another dog he really should not have issues with seperation anxiety. You can buy buzzer collars at the pet stores and when the dog bark's,whines, chews ect.whatever the unacceptable behavior is you have a remote to give the dog a little shock and normally a few times of being shocked they usually correct their behavior..Good luck..

Read "The Dog Whisperer" by John Richardson and Leslye Sharon Cole. I've learnt sooo much about dogs and their behaviour through this book!!
Here are some suggestions I have for you:
Dogs are pack animals - their ancestors being wolves - which needs a leader. If the owners of the dog are weak leaders (and please don't think I'm suggesting you are, I'm just generalising here) they will want to 'lead' the pack (be Top Dog).
The better the human is the leader, the better behaviour you'll get from your dog. The members of your family need to be Top Dog - thus getting a better behaved dog. Here are some ways to be "top dog"...
1) (I've put it first because it's very important) - Your dog's space is on the ground or floor. They should sleep / play / socialise at that level. Don't let your dog be at your level (ie: not on the couch, on the bed etc.) because height is a dominance thing with dogs. If they're at the same 'height' as you, they consider themselves as your equal, or worse still, top dog.
2) At dinner time, let the dog see you and your family eat first. Ina pack of wolves, the 'top dog' gets to eats the hunted food first, and then it goes down the hierachy. The most submissive, least powerful eat last. So to make yourselves the top dog here, you always eat first and let your dog see this.
3) When you return from work / school and the dog is whining at the door to be let in or to have cuddles, don't go to it until it is quiet and settled. Ignore its behaviour. Dogs are "What's in it for me?" creatures, and creatures of habit, so if they whinge, bark and cry and you give them what they want, then they'll learn that that's the behaviour they need to exhibit to get their own way. Only see to them once you're happy with their behaviour.
4) At play time, have toys that are for when you decide it's play time, and when play time is over put those toys away.
There's just a few hints on being the "top dog". Having those behaviours put into place should settle your dog and help with the other problem areas.

There's a book called Dog Speak by Bash Dibra .. it explains a lot about dogs ... different whines mean different things ...

Example ... shortened ... I removed their examples of situations
A long whine rising in pitch indicates anxiety or fear.
A low whine serves as an alert
A short worried whine can take place during escape
A low worried whine indicates submission or subordinate rank
A short eager whine is curiosity excitement or invitation to play
A screaming whine is used whe a dog is being beaten by a dominating dog
A loud screaming whine indicates pain or injury.

So knowing your dogs cry may help evaluate his issue and solve it

the book is very good in regard to dog ... recommended by a vet. it starts with choosing dogs and takes you through training and behaviors to care. Can be purchased for about 10 dollars at walmart but I've seen it cheaper online

Good luck with the pup

Have you tried a soothing Teddy bear. They are mainly used for children and babies. I have used this before and it has worked out the most unusual things. There are ones that play nursery songs and ones that do both songs and heartbeat. The heartbeat ones work the best
