How long does a K-9 usually work in the field? What happens when the dog retires? Do most officers keep them AND get a new one? Is it an issue if you already have two dogs? I mean don't you think it would really affect your other dogs if you got a new one that got to leave with you every day?

This is something that I'm hoping to be a possibility in my future, but I'm not sure it's a good idea with my other dogs. I have not talked to any trainers or other K-9 Units yet as this is far ahead in my future. I will of course learn more if I make it on the department. I just thought someone here might have some experience to share.

he constantly wants to go outside!!!
yesterday we left him to go outside to do his business on a leash, and he took off his collar himself, and ran down the street. and now he constantly wants to go outside. is it some kind of dog thing, around this time, like a mating period or something?

Alright. so my Dad threw out some rotten balogna and my dog got into it and ate it. I was not home but my mom was so scared and thought she was dying because as our dog was coming towards the house to come inside after using the bathroom, she was walking sideways and then she fell down and was convulsing and even convulsed her way under the car and seh could not get up. Then, she came inside and was still walking sideways, banging into things and fell down aned convulsed some more. So, my dad rushed home and when he came, she threw up and then shook a bit more. Then, she was perfectly fine and still is today. We can't take her to the vet because it is New Years and everything is closed, plus, she seems fine. We will take her , but in the meantime..does anyone know why this happened? My dad thinks it was the reaction her body had to the rotten food. We also heard that nitrate is really bad for dogs...and balogna has that. Oh and she is a 5 year old Australian Shephard

I have a beagle mix who really has some issues. He is 1 or 2 and I got him from a beagle rescue. The shelter told me he was locked in a backyard pen for the first year of his life and the only human contact he received was from the family kids who fed him occasionally. Needless to say the only people he would respond to when I first got him were children. This dog has so many fears but if you were to stick him in the middle of Chuckie Cheese restaurant for kids he would be in his glory. I took the dog away with me on a month long camping trip and he really bonded with me. Now I am afraid he will never bond with anyone else but me and my children. It has been five months since I got him and he will only socialize with other women if I am present and he wants no parts of men. My parents live with me and he will socialize with my mother in my presents and even play with her but my dad is his sworn enemy. He won't let anyone feed him or let him out of his crate when I am at work. Any help?

Do you really feed less? How did your dogs like it? Which formula did you try? Thanks!

I've heard that if a dog drinks from a toilet recently used by someone with AIDS and then licks you you can get the virus. If its true I'm not going to let the lady with AIDS next door visit me any more unless she uses her own bathroom first.

that you can have a dog that is easier to raise, train, and live with, if you follow the dogs instinct of pack drive? If so, why not do it? It would really eliminate alot of problems that I see being brought up here over and over. Comments please.

My wife and I's dog is a little one year old Papillon. We took him to get groomed for the first time last week. He weighs about 10lbs and is not very big. The grooming only took a little while. We have never gone grooming before with any of our other dogs. Should we tip her? If so, what percentage of the total cost should it be?

i have a male min pin that is about 27 weeks old who just is not getting the whole puupy pad, out door, potty training deal. his name is duke, and other than that, he is a really good dog. we have tried every method under the sun, and been consistant, and nothing works. what is so frusterating about all of this, is about a month ago, we got our girl min pin, lady, for christmas, who is not even half duke's age, and she is already almost trained. what is he not getting and what do i do? the deal is that we are moving to florida the first of feb. and if duke is not showing any sign of hope, i do not think that i will be taking him with me, as the apartment complex is very strict animals as is for this very reason.

My dog (german shepherd) has never really had a problem with leash walking- and he rarely pulls. His only problem is winding around my legs, switching off from left to right, and stopping to play with/smell something on the ground. How should i teach him to heel?

Okay, I've searched online and have found how to introduce you new baby to the family dog when returning home from the hospital...but what about reversing the situation and bringing a new puppy home instead. Anyone have good advice for me from that perspective? Or links to articles I should read, books to buy, etc. We have a 10 month old baby and will be bringing home a 7 week old chocolate lab (English) next weekend. We plan to crate train (the puppy that is ;-) and I will definitely supervise closely when the two are together. Any other words of wisdom would be appreciated...don't do it and you're crazy don't count as words of wisdom though. TIA

My boyfriend and I have been at house training our corgi for just about a year now. No matter how many times or how often we let our dog outside she still uses her crate to void. There is the occassion that she will go when on the leash (when she does she gets loads of praise) but more often than not she will only smell around outside until we bring her back in. We have tried the take her outside and if nothing in 5 minutes bring her in and put her in her crate for 5 mins then take her outside again/repeate method but she seems to hold off from going until we have given up from exhaustion and she just goes in her cage.

About 3 months ago we thought she finally had it. She was holding it through the night and while we were at work and she would rarely have an accident in the house or crate. But in the past month she has reverted back to the way she was when she was a puppy. Nothing tramatic has happened so I am un-sure where to turn.

Any ideas on how to break this habit?
