that you can have a dog that is easier to raise, train, and live with, if you follow the dogs instinct of pack drive? If so, why not do it? It would really eliminate alot of problems that I see being brought up here over and over. Comments please.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

Look how out of control kids are because Mom's & Dad's of the world won't create appropriate boundaries (which children crave and thrive in) because they're too afraid their kid won't 'like' them anymore.

Same issue with the dogs. Kids and dogs can love you and not respect you... my Mom (hippie) has told me a number of times that my kids are afraid of me .. I say only when they choose to do the wrong thing. Just like I'm afraid of the cop in my rear view mirror if I ran the red light -- it's called AUTHORITY.

I have two small dogs, and one tried to be bossy (the Chi) but learned quickly that I'm the boss around here. My daughter was upset because she wanted the Chi to be her dog and it naturally gravitated to me. I told her that the Chi knows I'm the boss, it's an instinct.

I'm sorry this flies in the face of the tree-hugging type who barter with their kids to please put the candy bar back for 30 minutes and ultimately give in because they don't want their kid to be mad at them... that doesn't work here... with my kids or my pets. I set the boundaries and you either follow them or there are consequences. That's the way the world works, sorry folks.

EDIT TO ADD:

Before someone jumps down my neck about my kids being afraid of me, I had this conversation with my 16 yo yesterday. We were talking about a friend's young teen daughter who lives out of state and visits during the summer. I said to my daughter that I didn't know why this little girl was so attached to me, and my daughter said "because you discipline her and everyone else just let's her run around wild." Kids don't always like it, but they really do need it, AND they'll thank you for it later.

I am the alpha "dog" in this house. I established that the minute I brought my dog home from the pound, and we have had very few problems since. Not everyone else has been a previous dog owner and has the experience to know that you need to make the rules.

Many folks here don't understand that their dog is a different species. They don't know that different animals have different instincts and behaviors. They don't understand that humans can't communicate with different species (apes are genetically closer to humans than canines, but we can't carry a conversation with a chimp). All they see is a "cute" puppy that they will coddle and raise as though it was a human baby. It's at that point that they realize what a four legged "monster" is ruling their home.
We have four dogs that we refer to as our "children", but we treat them as though they are dogs. They live by rules that we constantly enforce. We reward acceptable behavior and we punish unacceptable behavior. It is for that reason that we can have visitors to our home without having to worry about our dogs or guests behave in a way that would be unacceptable to anybody. It is for that reason that we can walk our dogs (together) around the neighborhood calmly, and in full control, and it for these reasons that we all live in a happy home together -- humans and dogs!
Happy New Year!

I, too, am tired of sending out the same answer to many many people. People try to apply human behavior to canine behavior and it just isn't that way.

As a Master Dog Trainer I have tried my best to get people to understand that you don't treat a dog like a human, no more than you would treat a horse like a chicken. I am simply overwhelmed with the ignorance out there.

I am very well educated when it comes to dogs and when you try to share your knowledge people think I am a mad woman and I don't know what I am talking about. I might as well talk to a wall as it would listen better and probably understand better than my human companions.

On this site I have got quite a few 'best answers' about dogs so that shows that some are paying attention.

I guess the best we can do is answer their dumb questions and try to get them to educate them selves cause you can't teach something you don't know anything about.

Greekman, now in order for them to understand the dogs instincts they would have to give up their own desire to sit on their butts and do research. Did you have too much holiday cheer or something??????? Will never happen. C'mon that means they would have to learn.......Not just tell each other what the Want to hear.
