Never been to petsmart, but when I had a dog I went to Petco. And for every 12 bags of Science Diet I bought, I got a free bag. So I got a free 40lb bag about every 10 or 11 months. Hey, it may not be a jackpot, but it helped.

I prefer PetSmart only because I had a bad experience with a Petco once. I purchased a Mountain Horned Dragon from a Petco years ago. When I took it to the vet he told me that he sees A LOT of sick animals (exotics) coming out of that particular store. I kept my dragon hoping he would get better, but sure enough he died a couple months after I got him and my "warranty" time was expired already. Petco was not real friendly when I asked about where they obtained the animals from and what type of screenings they went through. I also asked who their vet was that gives a clean bill of health to the animals they sell and they refused to give me a name.

Unfortunately, PetSmart doesn't carry the food I feed my dogs and Petco does, so that's all I go there for. For everything else I go to PetSmart.

Petsmart seems to be bigger and does have a better variety. As for quality, they are about equal. As for price, they vary in what you're looking for. I've found the same dog food cheaper at local pet stores then both Petco and Petsmart, they really mark it up.

I like PetSmart. They always seem to have a wide variety of the dog food brand that I like for my dog (Nutro)... and it is always reasonably priced. I haven't actually compared pries from each store- but I haven't had to. My dog gets bored with one flavor of food, so I have to periodically switch out flavors. I only like Nutro for him, and the Petco in my area only has one flavor of Nutro large breed puppy food. Petsmart has several, so there is really no contest there. We are also enrolled in the obedience training classes at Petsmart, and they are working like a charm! I can find all of the books, treats, and tools that i need for training... and some good durable toys as well. The pricing between Petsmart and Petco will vary, but not by much. Competition keeps prices relativly the same- but as far as selection goes, I would have to say PetSmart has the better deal. They also have some grooming salons at some of their locations, so that could be a plus for you as well.

Petco holds a slightly higher edge in my regard. The animals we buy here in our state are monitored by a local vet. When one of the small pets I bought was sick, they paid for it's vet visit. They also host a low cost pet vaccine clinic. I also get more frequent discounts and rewards from their rewards program.

The one thing I like about petsmart is that the sell large bulk birdfood in the quality brand I like. This doesn't seem to be available at the Petcos I've been to so I would be forced to buy the more expensive smaller bags. Luckily, I am able to choose from both stores since both are nearby eachother.

Where I live, we have both a Petsmart and a Petco. It really depends on what you are looking for. For my small animals, I prefer Petco. But for larger animals, such as cats or dogs, I find that Petsmart has a better variety of items.

I prefer to support local businesses when possible, but the local pet shops available to me all sell puppies which support puppy mills. People supporting puppy mills won't get a cent of my money, so in pet supplies I hit the three big chains.

I buy food at Pet Supplies Plus because they are the least expensive. We buy Nature's Miracle, rawhides, etc... there, too.

For things I can't find there, I go to PetSmart. I find they have a better selection and far lower prices than Petc. Petco is the most convenient of the three so I do shop there on occasion.

Petsmart here- Cages too small, holding too many animals. They mostly sell food and supplies though.

Petco here- I have heard there are alot of bad petcos in the US. Ours is fairly good though. The reptile expert seems to know what he's doing. He knows alot about snakes and he has 37 of them and a crested gecko. The mice/rat/guinea pig/ferret area doesn't look to good. The cages are a bit too small and I think its too cold over there. The birds look fine. Sometimes they let out the bigger parrots that love people. The fish are reeeeally good though. They sell some really tropical fish too.

I have been to both and overall I prefer PetSmart. It has more variety and the quality dog foods are cheaper as are many of the supplies.
