Children are very much allowed at dog shows.
As some of the others have said, it's badly behaved children and strollers that exhibitors object to.
Your breeder probably asked because it's important to know who a puppy/dog will be sharing the house with.
When you bring your child to the show, be sure to keep a close eye on her so that she doesn't mistakenly approach a dog who may not be kid-friendly. Also be sure to ask first before allowing her to pet a dog.
Dog shows last however long you want to stay. If you are going to watch your breeder show, it could take up to an hour or so before they are finished showing (from their posted ring time) depending on how many dogs there are in the breed, or scheduled ahead of them.
If you want to stay and watch groups, etc. you could be there all day (again, depending on what time your breed shows).
Have fun!

Depends on how many dogs are to be judged. most go for 4-5 hrs if its multi breeds being jusfged and ponced around.
There are lots of kids at dog shows and most enjoy it. They get to pat the dogs, see a great variety of breeds and get a hell of a laugh out of seeing the dogs take their human owners on the most amazing prance around the arena. Of course the owners think they are the ones showing the dog, but the dogs know otherwise! The owners are often more entertainment than the dogs as they cavort around with silly looks on their faces. Facial expressions are amazing on those who don't get a place and if one thinks fashion modeling is a collection of bitches, go to a dog show! Take the child I am sure she will love every minute and there is lots of entertainment for you too now that I have told you what to look for.

Some dog shows can last from 8am till 6 pm. Don't plan on subjected a kid for the whole thing.
Like others said, no strollers and no screaming out of control kids. Nothing worse than heading for the ring with a coated breed and seeing a kid with sticky, candy coated fingers grabbing at your dog!

Well. who CARES what the handler looks like. It is suppose to be about the dogs. Sad when people are too busy watching the handlers to watch the dogs.
"if one thinks fashion modeling is a collection of bitches, go to a dog show!"
Well, there ARE a few sore losers, apparently here as well.

Go for it- after all you will want to see how your child and the dog get along before making any decisions.
I love to drop into dog shows they are great fun. I always see children around, sometimes they are children of exhibitors sometimes they are just kids with mums and dads having fun checking out the dogs and quite often getting their first lessons on how to behave properly around animals.

As long as your child is well-behaved and under control, she will be welcome. Make sure she does not run up to dogs and hug them (you'd be amazed how many parents will allow this). Always ask before patting a dog, especially a long-haired one. Nothing frustrates a handler like having several hours of grooming messed up minutes before ring time.

Exhibitors only have one objection with regard to children, and that is STROLLERS !!! Please leave the stroller at home or in your car, because you only have to run over one dogs foot to ruin someones day, it can get congested at ringside. The other problem with a stroller is that every where you go you will be leading with your childs face. This will put your child eye to eye with every dog there.
