My new dachshund FREAKS OUT from time to time for no apparent reason when he's on his leash. We will be walking and all of a sudden he will just STOP, dig his paws in and refuse to walk. The odd thing is we've tried to observe when he does it and there's no pattern or reoccurring thing that would make him so skittish. It can be on concrete, on grass, on pavement, when there's cars or when there arent, people near or not...it's really random not to mention aggrevating! Anyone had a similar experience and know how to break him of this??

I give my dog dinner (Caesar Brand) food for breakfast and dinner is that bad? I believe dry dog food count as a snack rather than a meal.

I have a male Jack Russell Terrier. Just like any Jack Russell, he's full of energy and a little troublemaker. I'm thinking about getting another dog, probably a Golden Retriever. I know that Golden Retrievers get along well with other dogs, but I'm not so sure about my JRT. He seems friendly when there's another dog around, but I don't know if that would change if another dog would live with us. Also, he's really, really close to me, and barks when I leave the room and have to leave him there (like locked in the kitchen). He's very, very attached to me.

Hi, we are considering our first pet. I have grown up with a dog myself and I know the tremendous difference that brought to my life. Now when my kids want to have one, I cannot deny the same for them. However, I am not sure about typical expenses of a dog. I know it has a lot of bearing on the size of it. Let's say 50lb.
I am interested in knowing what kind of expenses - meals, medical, grooming etc I am facing. Please help.

lol, I have a labrador retriever, and as you may know they are VERY hyper! I want to know some games you play with your dog to release all of their energy. My retriever doesn't retrieve, gets bored of hide and seek, and gives up on finding treats. So are there any other games out there?

Last night when I was with my four puppies I noticed that one of the male puppies had big lumps in his testicle area. It appears to me that they have dropped..but they are also not in the area. There are lumps to the left and right of where the testicles should be. All my other male puppies are not showing signs of theirs dropping. Do you think the puppy is just ahead in his maturity, or do you think this is a real problem?

My neutered male Pomeranian keeps trying to mount my female "intact" Pom who is in her first heat. I don't understand why he would be trying to breed with her since he is fixed. My vet verified that he has been neutered although when I bought him, my breeder said he was intact. He definitely does not have any visible testicles and like I said, my vet told me he was neutered. I actually took him to the vet to get him neutered because I thought he was intact. That is when my vet informed me that he had previously been neutered.

A week ago I took my, almost 6 month old, puppy to see Santa. It was to benefit the animal sheltar, etc. and I thought it would be fun. A few days later, I believe it was one or two, he started having diarrhea. I took food away for 12 hours and then started feeding him rice. He didn't like just rice, so I would give him a little plain chicken in the rice as well. It cleared up, so I started him back on his regular food. I think that time I may have started him up too soon.

So then he went to the groomers for the first time. Overall he did quite well, but again I think it was a scary thing for him. He started getting diarrhea again. So this time I kept him off of his food for several days and things cleared up. So yesterday I started him back on his food.

Today he has already gone 3 times and the last time he was starting to get a little soft again.

I have a puppy I am training to sleep in a kennel and I am training him in other ways. I am new to kennels. He is a retriever and will also be trained to retrieve geese, etc in about 6 months. I read an article by a guy who trains hunting dogs to come to their kennel on command and sounds like he has done well. One suggestion he has is to feed the dog Inside the kennel and avoid any chew toys in the kennel. He works to make the kennel a refuge. What do you think of feeding the dog Inside the kennel and do you have any other suggestions on training? He is still not potty trained after two weeks (has an accident inside now and then) though we take him out often and give him rewards. That is also a concern.
